What will bring NAB 2007 ...

for us Panasonic fans? Will there be the 16 GB P2 card?
Again already a lot of times dicussed on this site but will there be a small update of the HVX like improved LCD/viewfinder or maybe the outdated PCMCIA format will be replaced with the express format to make it compatable with new laptops (Macs). What about a feature to flip the LCD image or some other software updates? I can not imagine that we have to wait untill 2008 before we get an update while the competions it throwing out a lot of new models. But than again why should Panasonic. I am just very curious if they will present something new in the HVX price range.

No indication of anything new in the HVX price range. They have talked about three new big shoulder-mount cameras, plus that little P2 Deck thing, and I would presume we'd see 16gb cards by then too. As for an updated HVX200, maybe a firmware update but there's been no hint or indication of any other type of change to it.

Barry, can you indicate what in principle would be possible with a firmware update? More frame rates probably but what else?

....I'd like to see an HVX/Cell Phone combo... I mean, hell,....everybody's doin it!

As I understand firmware, it's the top-level operating system, the menu set, the ability to allow more framerates in the menu, etc.

But it wouldn't allow changes at the chip level. The chips are hardware, and their capabilities are locked in. Which is why something like adding a flip function at the DSP level wouldn't be possible -- if the DSP doesn't have the capability built into it already, then the firmware can't do anything about it.

I hope (and it can only be a hope, as I don't know for sure) that firmware options that we could eventually see would include things like unlocking additional frame rates, allowing for user-settable "loop record" buffer times, allowing us to trim MXF files to throw away unnecessary portions of clips, ability to have the "TAKE NO." metadata field automatically increment, etc. Those things all seem like reasonable to expect from a firmware update.

But something like adding AVC-HD would never be possible through simple firmware. That would require an AVC hardware encoding chip to be present.

I've got a Nokia N93... not quite an HVX, but for a cell phone camera it's pretty good!

That could be implemented through a P2 card encoder could it not? Slide a special P2 card into slot two and voila, you can record AVC-HD onto card one?? You could't swap cards for never ending recording, but with the decreased space requirements of AVC-HD that wouldn't be such a big deal.

Not sure I'd be interested in such a thing, but it seems feasible...

Hint.... DUCT TAPE + fav mobile of choice, it always does it for me!! :)))

indy....

didnt Panasonic just developed a 8 gig SD card. So if P2 uses 4 cards in array mode, thats going to be 32 gig. :)

I want 25p and other framerates !
