HDMI monitoring??

I was planning on buying the INTENSITY card from black magic. This has HDMI out so I was planning on just buying any old HD LCD TV for studio monitoring...Does this seem like the right move for great quality? FCP 5.1.2 to HDMI out to TV...

Well...it'll let you see your picture, but "any old HDTV" is a non-calibrated, non-calibratable device. Akin to plugging "any old TV" to your NLE and doing your work that way - can you trust the results? It is certainly suitable for editorial workflow in terms of seeing a realtime picture out, but not for color critical work. So, it's a low cost, halfway solution - good enough for some instances, but not for finishing work.

More money but I think the direction you have outlined isn't cheap . . . so, look at the Panasonic 17" monitor -- maybe Spec-Comm or somebody can make you a deal. I have never regretted buying mine.

the intensity card is $250 and you can get a pretty decent LCD HDTV with HDMI in for around $700. I would love the Panny 17" but I've never seen it for less then $2500. I'm not doing any real broadcast work, just events and specal situation shoots for people viewing their product on either a computer screen in a compressed format or some other kind of TV. As far as DVCPRO HD...here is the spec page...http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/techspecs/

That does look like a sweet solution. It does also output DVCPRO HD which is something I've been needing to get in a monitoring situation. Also will be a sweet capture card for the HDMI camcorders on the market. Anyone purchase this and use it on a G5? Looks like such a great deal! Thanks for putting this up .

That's a great idea.

No plug in for edius ... but I suppose it allows you to view you finished article.

You better confirm that this will out put DVCProHD in any native mode. So if you shoot and edit in any pN sequence, it doesn't work as I understand it.

Remember, HDV also has 720 progressive. My understanding is that it will not work with DVCProHD pN sequences.

Where do you see this at BlackMagic's web site?

My understanding is that Intensity does not pN outputting.

On the link above...

HD Format Support 1080i50, 1080i59.94, 720p50, 720p59.94, 720p60

Checked it again on the tech specs above. That is a BUMMER. So it doesn't do 24 or 30p? That's a deal breaker then... unless it's a matter of converting on the output... I'm not a tech guy, so anyone else been able to deceipher this site?

maybe it is just too good to be true. This was going to be my Christmas present to myself. Now I have to find something else. The other cards look nice but they are atleast double the price or more, right? Anyone else have one of the ohter HD cards?

Sorry for gettting everyone's hopes up...

As someone answered me in a Macbook to Marshall post, take a look at the Matrox MXO.

Scratch that. I overlooked the HDMI issue.

The HDMI card from Blackmagic would do better for capture from a V1u. At the same time, I think it's cheaper than other Analog cards, which would prompt me to buy one and an AJA RGB-to-HDMI converter for tethered shoots.

This would be a deal breaker for me too. I need 720/24p previewing and the web site certainly isn't clear.

There are issues being addressed by Matrox on DVCProHD footage.

HDV stuff looks fabulous.

Talked to Dan May at Black magic and this was his response:

The card actually does not support 720 24p monitoring. Likely we will
support these additional formats at the same time that the major software
partners (Apple, Adobe) support them natively in the timeline (rather than
24p over 60i etc). For now it doesn't do us a lot of good if we say we can
support those settings if you can't do anything with it in any of the
programs we tie into!

However the formats that are supported by those editing applications will
work great with the P2 cards using Intensity as the monitoring solution.

Thanks

Doesn't FCP support 720/24pNative natively in the timeline?

That's what I ask when I talked with BM.

Don't know what Mr. May is indicating.

right david... it is native in FCP 5.1 and above. No pull down or whatever it is.. So if this is the case, will they support it on the MAC side is the question. I think they'd have a lot of sales if they did...

I mean going to Costco.. there's a ton of this HDMI monitors on the shelves and at a great price.... I'd like to see a real world evaluation but might be a great solution to monitor.. and get a cheap HD as well.... Ahhh what a pipe dream.

WHen the hell does the buying ever stop? Maybe when ya pushing up daisies? shoot.
