HD Delivery in a Blu-Ray and HD-DVD World

Fellow HVX users:

With the arrival of the Playstation 3 and the xbox 360 hd-dvd drive, as well as the first blu-ray videos on video stores, I believe it is now the time for us to be able to deliver our HD content in the format it was intended: HD. I would like to know if anyone is already delivering content created with the HVX in both these formats, and what are the results- more specificaly:

1- What are you encoding? (h264, mpeg 2?)

2- What software are you using for encoding?

3- Are the results satisfactory?

4- Are you already using a HD-DVD Burner, or Blu-ray burner?

I'm working on the mac platform. I know, for example, that the new PS3 can actually play HD movies if they are copied to the internal Hard drive, if not recorded on a BLU ray disk: anyone tried this?

4- It looks like Toast can actually burn BLU Ray disks- does it mean that we can put our dvcpro HD quicktime on it and it will imediatelly convert it to Blu-Ray movie? (Of course one needs a blu ray burner.)

4.1- Does Toast encode AVC, or Mpeg 2?

Lots of questions, but I feel we need this sorted out, in order to know the best process for encoding and delivery

Please post your experiences!

I am SORT of delivering on HD-DVD. I have four small projects (from 5-17:00), and each one will be mastered onto HD-DVD...but these won't be used until 2009, or until the client has upgraded in-office monitors to HD.

DVDSP can do HD-DVD...all of the presets are there for encoding in Compressor to H.264, and pretty much, everything works the same in DVDSP whether you're doing an NTSC disc or an HD-DVD.

Early Toshiba HD DVDs set top played red laser discs using mpeg2 HD and aiff encodes out of DVDSP4.x without menus. Later ones don't.

Ulead Movie Factory 5.1 seems to encode with menus to HD DVDs that are playable on later Toshibas.

h.264 encoded HD DVDs don't play on anything yet out of a Mac.

Don't know of a HD DVD burner that is compatible with a Mac, nor a blu ray burner that DVD SP will recognize.

Sony has a blu ray in some laptops. No software for creating blu ray DVDs are included. Interestly, reports are that player/burner won't play blu ray commercial DVDs.

That's my understanding of the status quo

So, in other words, we still can't deliver to consumer HD players, right? Strange.

Anyone seen the Lacie BLu-ray burner, posted on a different thread? Is this a viable route?

A viable route towards what? What are you going to author in?

You can deliver to consumer HD players, but currently on red laser dye.

That means about 45 minutes of footage on a DL DVD R.

Ulead does this.
