Sony announces 4k camera.. and oh yes, a 1080 one too.

Jim, sunglasses and cameras aren't exactly the same... having raised so much money without having shown a single decent moving picture which illustrates the 35mm depth of field you're claiming is great ! Greescreen (Stump pictures), tele (the parking lot) and "macro" (the glasses) don't do it. Please take your camera outside, take some landscapes shots, some people moving, it would be better...

Just my two cents...

Kristin

OK... and we won't disappoint. Then what?

Quite frankly, showing pics that dispell all doubt is easy (as soon as we don't have to rely on Frankie). Finishing the project on time is the hard part.

I beg to differ. In any professional marketplace, quality is what it comes down to. When you make your bread and butter from a product, you will want the best just as you would want the best for your own health. Oakleyfulfilled that need for professional sportsmen and women. And not only have they succeeded, but theyve also rendered the competition obsolete by pushing the boundaries of technology and not by resting on status quo (Rayban/Sony).

The success of RED will no doubt depend on their ability to create their own proprietry technology (Mysterium) and patent anything they can get their hands on. I guess patents are the nail in the elephants toe when competing with large companies, as demonstrated in the Oakley case studies. And if RED is to follow in Oakleys footsteps, the future looks as bright as the red hot sun.
I second that! On the other hand, it seems we are in a convergence era where a brand like youtube took 18 months to value 1.6 billion of dollars and Sony had to hire a non-japanese foreign for to handle with the last hype of the Steve Jobs' company. Last but not least, some years ago, in Europe there was who proclaimed the end of that same company vs. the Microsoft empire. However both coexist. But now is Gates who is trying to compete with his zen reply to the ipod.

Buy one now... while they announce it's replacement. That is an interesting marketing strategy that I never thought of...
But if you invest in Sony's camera now, then you'll also invest in all of the CineAlta infrastructures/equipments too. The 4K camera announcement is just to show they are going to a right direction, and therefore the CineAlta's investments wouldn't be a waste. All of their equipments that we use are reliable so far, great support.

And they pay for their marketing. Forum marketing is free, but got to spend time (expense) answering questions, and listening. Just different, not worse or better. In fact, all reservation holders are kind of similar to RED's investors, as we are funding some part of the product development cost. In normal course, investors are allowed to ask some questions and deserve some transparency. Can't get everything for truely free....

Good idea that every reservation holders to ask challenging and constructive questions and input their needs to improve the camera's performance, even if they are long and complicated questions.

No need for an image to know this, as long as the sensor size doesn't change you'll have the same DOF as the same focal length & aperture on Super 35mm film. Pick up an American Cinematographer Manual, there's DOF charts in there.

Hi Y, as reservation holders this only represents our place in line and to give the RED team a final figure to gauge the initial production run. As it has been stated often, we are not providing them any funds for product development cost whatsoever. But the fact they are so open (Sony would never us look behind the curtain-- but that's ok it is how they do things..) and the fact that they have opened themselves up to suggestions and criticism... Well, the whole process has been very interesting. But I do see how you feel that way.

I don't think anyone is saying that the 950, or now F23, is a bad camera. What is interesting is that Sony releases its NEW cine camera, then 5 minutes later announces that its 4k camera (due out sometime in a few years) is the new standard of excellence. Seems to put a bullet in the heart of their 2/3" cine lineup. Interesting marketing. That's all.

Jim

In the digital cinema market I don't know that I agree with every one's assessment that announcing a camera due out in several years is a jab at a product being released in a few months.

If you announced a new 8k native sensor to be available in 09, it wouldn't change any of my RED One plans. It looks like all Sony is doing is letting people know, that when they're ready for 4k, Sony will be there. If the skepticism of RED proves anything, it's that most DPs aren't ready for the 4k transition yet.

It's very much like the Apple approach. *They'll* let you know when you're ready to upgrade. But until then, sit tight, buy inferior hardware and try to explain to your PC brethren why "when it does come out it'll be 'impossibly awesome'.

Jim,

I apologize if I've been too direct... I didn't want to hurt anyone... it's just that your camera seems so great that I really don't understand why you don't start with shooting some casual things outside like landscapes, etc with a standard lens, wide lens and a small tele to visually compare with 35mm instead of complicating with greenscreen work. I think it would be great ! Charts, technical studies are of course very important but sometimes simple things help too ! Especially in your case, as you seem to have better connections (with ASC members for instance) than a poor girl like me : imagine a small shortfilm shot in a few days, a story with everything usually used : travelling, crane, steadycam, a small dialog, landscapes... with this camera ? I WOULD KILL for this !

Kristin

You've also got to consider that most of the industry is not well informed or aware of a good compressed 4K workflow.

Presently, most industry experts would consider a 4K workflow mostly impractical because they're thinking of the logistics of working with uncompressed 4K on the set and in post. Redcode is as much a star as the camera is when you think about it.

I can understand the desire for this. I'm sure footage will come as soon as they have an assembled camera that can be moved and operated easily. What they're working with now is probably similar to moving a house of cards around, probably don't want to put it on a crane outdoors till you glue the damn cards down.

Yes. Yes... and Yes. :) Thanks Matthew, it really needed to be said. DP's and Lighting Cameramen/women that scoff, should really look at their past/present Tape based workflows. They have been working in a compressed enviro for years...

Hi,

Not when we can avoid it, admittedly I have just been recording to HDCAM SR at the double speed 880 which seems fairly transparent.

Hi Stephen,

Absolutely ( I knew that would get your attention), this is why redcode raw is very encouraging to me. The fact that we have a choice to give our clients the best possible path to quality and flexibility based on their needs and budget is fantastic. The rest is lenses, lighting and appplication of craft (yes, yes, story,etc.).

Btw, I really enjoy your work and I am glad you post here as well. I look forward to downloading your clips. (please post your <I believe>Omega watch clip, I am a fan of the SeaMaster Series and I bet your work looks great)

Have good weekend,

Andrew Benz

Hi Stephen, very interesting - what setup did you run?

i am still very undecided if we go HDCAM SR - right now we use HDCAM tape and use disk uncompressed if we want full transparent. SR Is a bit of a inbetween format i am afraid and i am not sure if to include it in the midtermplanning. If it would have 2k, maybe even 4k additional to 1080p with DCI compliant encoding, that would be something different.

But the "take 4 HDCAM SR VTR" for 4K approach sony is offering is - ehm - to expensive and to complicated. another example of sonys lack of cleverness in marketing. add a 4k DCI encoderboard to the SRW and you would have a hot seller.

Hi Andrew,

If you go to see Casino Royale there is a Bond/Omega Commercial, I shot the watches for that one.

Hi,

Viper to HDCAM SR portable running double speed. Less of a pain than a raid, probably the best option today. Compositing on a Chrome Imageing 'Matrix'.

I understand that and agree with you, but also it's a form short term debt, such as 'Commercial Paper', but with RED reservation there's zero APR or annual interest. In that sense, you are similar to equity holder. Your deposit can be refunded anytime, after one year you'll get your $1K back, but you have zero interest earning. We are giving RED a short term debt with zero interest and without any definite maturity date.

It's definitely a unique and smart approach of marketing this cam', and also DoP is a small community, this approach could work. So if this is their main approach to marketing, then all I'm saying is answer and listen all criticism (which they have) with joy, especially even more to the reservation holders.

Exactly, we want to see the latitude handling.....and moving object on how your shutter perform.......

Hi Y,

Sure, I am with you. I only mention the above because the idea of a deposit started a firestorm debate elsewhere that severely hindered actual critical debate. I only stressed the point for the casual observer that takes the small piece of info and blows it out of proportion. Not you of course:-).

I am glad to hear you got to see the Nuart screening. Now that is commitment. Brook Willard went as my "eyes and ears" and wrote one hell of a report, his breakdown answered alot of my queastions. Brook rocks.

Cheers Y,

Andrew

I've a long time observer to all RED's threads, and it seems that they only cater questions to known pro or DoP. And I agree with some that reservation holder should be in first priority and not be treated as if their comments/questions/inputs don't worth anything, they give them their money, that's stronger than 'I promise'. Their assets could be stuck for a year or so........
