Slo-Mo and REDCODE RAW questions...

There is no REDCODE RGB at 4k, sorry. Data rates for 2k RGB are as yet untested.

No 4K even from REDCINE? I'm a bit surprised this isn't possible, given the comments in the other thread that REDCODE RGB footage would be usable in any QuickTime app, which presumably means it'll be implemented as a QuickTime component. In my experience, QuickTime will let you export anything at any resolution with any codec it supports, even codecs which are usually tied to specific resolutions.

Now, the notion that it's horribly impractical to do anything with hypothetical REDCODE RGB 4K footage (like, you know, actually play it back in real time) wouldn't surprise me too much.

AH, I see what you're asking. The camera itself does not make 4k RGB REDCODE files. I don't see why you'd want to in REDCINE, but there's no hard reason why not.

My thinking is that it might be useful as part of a budget 4K post workflow. If I'm understanding correctly, REDCODE RAW won't be usable in QuickTime apps, but REDCODE RGB will. As such, trascoding to REDCODE RGB at 4K gives you a 4K format you can work with in lots of apps (Shake, etc.) without having to go uncompressed.

Of course, there are other QuickTime codecs one could use to achieve this, but I haven't found anything that seems very workable. JPEG 2000 would be a good choice, except that QuickTime's implementation seems to be very poorly optimized (read: horrendously slow). I'm guessing REDCODE RGB will do better. (Though, as I said above, if it's still not fast enough for real-time playback, I won't be too surprised. And it'll still be useful.)

it sounds like you're on a Mac
it's my understanding that FCP doesn't do 10 bit RGB ( it will read them as 8bit) ... so decide if you are going for a 10bit workflow or 8 bit

Right, I'm aware of the limitations of the current version of FCP. As I speculated in another thread, these might go away in the next version, because Apple might be moving to an engine based on the one in Motion. Right now I'm just anticipating doing offline in FCP, and online in... well, that seems to be a missing component on the Mac right now.

So even if you render to uncompressed tiff you will only have a 8 bit tiff, from you original 10-12 bit RED footage?
