Red DOF concerns

I see, Gibby. Thanks for clarifying.

Just like to remember that even if that happens, that function would only work with still camera lenses, that have the iris "trigger". Cine lenses do not.

Honestly, I don't think that would be a necessary resource though...

Cheers!

Very true Nick. RED has left the door open for a possible future OVF somewhere down the road. Perhaps then we'd see a DOF preview.

I'm really looking forward to testing out the focus assist for the EVF and on-board screen. If they all dance well together I'll be a happy camper indeed!

I was thinking more on the line that the camera would aid you in how to adjust the lighting and/or aperture to get a desired DOF.

With their announced histogram you should be well covered there. That, coupled with the focus assist should work well. I'd like to see zebra included also, but if the histogram function is fast, and available in both the EVF and screen, perhaps a zebra would be redundant.

Good point, and with RED announcing their intention for RED One to be a fully manual camera, even if we're using 35mm photo lenses, they will be manual lenses.

...but with RED's attention to detail, and specifically their inclusion of a 720 screen, a 720p EVF (optional),...

I am sure this is a dumb question but as a 14 year film dp (I have done some HD this year) I have no clue on what a EVF is? I took the leap to buy a Red on the 31st so I am trying to learn as much as possible.

I assume the mentioned inclusion 720 screen is the small screen on the back of the camera? (This screen can be moved anywhere on the camera?)

The 720p (progressive?) EVF screen. Is that a side flip out screen kind of like the one on consumer cameras?

I thought they already said that they would have a cropped portion of the sensor data available for the viewfider (and also out to other monitors?) to aid in focus pulling, but I can see how a complicated shot may need multiple crops (selects) to really be helpful.

Finner,

Many people are crossing over in technology. The only silly question is one that isn't asked...

EVF is an acronym for electronic viewfinder. RED is making an optional EVF available for RED One. The EVF has been verified to be 720p resolution. The EVF serves a similar function to the optical viewfinder (OVF) you're used to using in the film industry, except it is electronic, rather than optical. The focus assist function of the camera allows you to see and set critical focus when using the EVF or detachable screen, either one. RED One ships with a detachable screen, also verified to be 720p resolution. Yes, the "P" is for progressive, where each frame is independent. The exact technology of the screen hasn't been verified. Possibilities are LCD, LCoS, SED, OLED, Nano LCoS, and maybe others. That screen can be re-mounted almost anywhere on the camera or optional Cage One, via multiple mounting hardpoints. It's much larger than the small stationary screen on the back of the camera. That screen is a data screen for viewing menus, etc.

Welcome to the RED reservation family, and congrats on squeeking in under the line!

Thanks Gibby

That clears things up for me a bunch. The explanation you give on how the system will work shows me that they really are designing a well thought out modular system in many ways.

Glad to help guys...at various points in my long career as a cinematographer, photographer, and videographer people have stepped up to mentor me and answer my questions. I'm completing that Karma loop by helping others when I can, in acknowledgment of those who helped me...
