RED @ NAB NY Today

Graeme is right.. things keep changing during development, Red has always been very upfront about that, and promised that things would change.
However, Jim has confirmed that RESERVATION holders will receive the display included in the $17.5 k price. But thats just for reservation holders.. and that does not mean non reservation holders down the road wont receive it in the price, its just not guaranteed.

Its really a good idea to reserve a Red before the 31st.

Sure Graeme, I'm perhaps under the misillusion that it didn't need confirming or denying is all. I'd taken that thread as a fairly definitive statement and if I was wrong to do so then I fear people including myself might feel slightly let down. Needless to say though the camera is an exceptional piece of equipment and at 17,500 I still believe the camera on it's own is a bargain, it's just not as much of a bargain if it doesn't come with the things I and I'm sure many others have anticipated! :)

Whilst I can understand Technical Specifications could not be locked down until December I thought the package details had already been settled.

Well, even if you did have to pay extra for the LCD and battery, would it even matter?

Heck, I'm sure some of the Red users would go out and buy $1,000+ Anton Bauer battery setups for their RED cameras as soon as or before they get them.

The LCD's would either already be present or would be another quick buy. I'm already looking at the new 26" Panasonic professional LCD ($4,000, which isn't too bad when you think about it) and Sanyo just announced that 1080p 7" screen a short while ago which would be great for the field.

But if I hadn't put down my reservation already and the base price did raise a little due to the heavy costs of production would I be mad? No. That would only mean I'd have to save a little more and put things off a little longer while I save up the extra because what the camera does would be worth every penny.

I may still have to hold some projects off a little anyway because I'm taking a gigantic leap from a lowly Canon GL1 to the freakin' RED!!! :) I'm thinking about a heavy duty tripod, dolly systems, ARRI light kits and lighting equipment, lenses above all else, microphones, chromakeying equipment and software, matteboxes, filters, cranes, and, though I have no need to mention it, all the other RED accessories that the RED Team is working on.

So what if you had to pay a little extra for an LCD or battery, you'd most likely end up replacing them anyway. Also, don't forget, Jim has already said that the LCD and battery were included so until he says different everything's cool. Anything else is just rumor.

Good post Jack. And your right.. people are gonna probally wanna power the camera with some sort of industry standard battery, be it V lock or AB or whatever.. as long as Red as a standard power in im sure people will be happy.

Well, I for one don't have any industry standard batteries, and I wasn't planning on buying another lcd, be it 26" or not (26" doesn't work too well with doc work). So I certainly don't agree with the "what the heck does it matter" mentality.

Jim, use your magic wand and put and end to this little discussion. (please?)

Whilst I don't completely disagree with Jarred and Jack's comments they seem to be rather negative towards the accessories that will be shipping with Red One. Is it too much to expect that the battery is of an equivilent quality of Industry Standard batteries or the LCD be equivalent to others available on the market? Personally I anticipated buying another Red Battery, Anton Bauer battery or other to compliment the original Red Battery, not to purchase a setup to practically irradicate it.

I genuinely don't mean to sound rude, i just feel such comments towards accessories such as these only leads to the belief that they are or rather will be substandard and simply thrown in as a little bonus to get you started but not something that you ought to rely on as professional accessories.

Your not understanding what im saying.

Graeme is right.. Red isn't going to make crappy batteries, your getting the wrong idea. The point is that the Red camera will most likely be able to be powered off of industry standard power solutions, just like every other professional 100k+ camera does.. thats not a negative thing, its a positive thing.

Well then you should be happy. there are many operators that have invested thousands and thousands of dollars in chargers/batteries that align to a standard. That allows users with an existing power workflow, power belts, stackable V locks, $1000 chargers etc to be used with Red. There is a reason that you can buy an Anton or Vlock adapter to use on almost any professional, even prosumer camera ever made.

The RED accessories will certainly not be sub-standard. Jim wouldn't allow that, and hence it won't happen.

I thoroughly believe you Graeme and it's always good to be reminded of that. However, the thing I've found with certain tools is that people can talk about them in a way in which others begin to believe they aren't going to be good enough for the job, I just think this is a danger that can exist in this type of open marketing philosophy, which is why, again, it's good to be reminded from time to time by the manufacturer, or member of, that quality is paramount.

I hope that the Red Package is everything I expect and more as does everyone else here. I cannot begin to imagine the kind of pressure that puts on the Red team which is why as I said before I'd still purchase the camera if it was just the body, but like any responsible consumer, and in the nicest possible way, I hope to get the most for my buck! :)

lets get one thing straight .. RED has very HIGH standards .. if it/something doesn't meet those you will NOT see it ... RED doesn't do things cheap - they do it affordable ... RED is going to deliver a camera that we could not have dreamed/thought of a last October 2005 ... when you think/see RED also think/see high quality !!!

ha ha yeah speaking of the Cinematograph.. wouldnt it be cool if Red was a 2 in one Camera/4k projector :)

I now demand that feature.

Any word on whether the LA screening will use the same footage shown at IBC/NAB or whether it will be new footage?
