P2 Store and MacBooks???

Yes. You do have to do a button-press combination to switch the P2 Store into Mac-compatible mode but it can be fully compatible.

Yeah, do the Mac-format button sequence, and it'll work fine...I use it with a MacBook on a daily basis. Don't expect to edit or even playback footage in realtime, though.

I have a 2.0 GHz MacBook with 2 gigabytes of RAM.

I can edit and playback 720/24p footage without issue.

what is the mac button press combo? just picked up a p2 store and was wondering how to configure it for mac? and if there's an easy to follow user guide post here...

Hello David,

I am about to take the plunge into FCP. I will be shooting on the HVX using P2 cards. Was wondering if you had any regrets going with the macbook instead of the MacPro desktop. I am having a very difficult time deciding which way to go.
It just seems to me that a macbook will add so much mobility for clients.

Also, do you use an external Raid as a media drive?? If so, which do you recommend??

Lastly, is the DVI port able to output to a monitor to view your edited footage as you go??

Thanks

We have a MacPro with 5 GBs of RAM, and four internal SATA drives. One is the boot, a second the scratch, a third a p2 backup drive, and the fourth we store DigitalJuice footage that has been transcoded to DVCProHD 720/24p.

We are just experimenting with the MacBook, and are surprised at how well it handles DVCProHD 720/24p captured directly into FCS 5.1.2 to either the internal Hitachi TravelStar 7200 rpm or to the Toshiba 2.5 inch in a bus powered USB2 drive. Very surprised.

DVCProHD 720/24p runs about 5.67 MB/s. You don't need a raid.

We also purchased a miniDV to DV connector and a DVI-D to HDMI cable (24 pin) and can run footage out of the MacBook to a HDMI Samsung LCD HD monitor

It looks pretty good, but I don't believe it is true HD. Direct out component from the cam is better.

Thanks for the quick response,

I had a few other questions if you don't mind.

Is the top of the line MacBook ready to edit HD right out of the box with FCP or does it need a special capture and/or graphics card??

Also, I noticed in another thread you recommended a G-tech external drive. Would the 500GB/7200rpm drive they offer be a sufficient and reliable media storage drive???

I am trying to price everything as close as I can, I guess I just want to know if there is anything that I am overlooking as far as what to purchase.

Thanks again.
