I Made A Huge Mistake, Please Help Me!

I recently shot my first High Def music video using the HVX and p2 card workflow. The video was shot in 720p24p . On set I copied each p2 card to my desktop via a PCM slot on my powerbook g4. I confirmed that all the cards copied and that no data was lost in the transfer.

I later then imported those clips into FCP (5.0.04) using the built in import panasonic p2 command. When I went to edit the video I noticed that when I dragged clips into the timeline they were not being natively rendered.

I later read on this form that one possible soultion was that I did not have the proper easy setup selected at the time of import. I realize now that I used 720p60 easy setup when I initially imported the clips.

After reading some suggestions on the form I decide to re-import the orginal raw p2 data into a brand new Mac Pro running FCP 5.1.2 with the correct easy set-up. While in the render que I deleted the clips from the que command, but to my suprise it deleted the clips from the actual source not just the render que. I realize now that this was a terriblle mistake and I later found the eject button in the uper left corner.

I am now left wth the first attempt imports of the footage made on a power book running FCP 5.0.4. However one orginal card copy did not get deleted. I imported the footage the right way and it worked fine.

So I now have examples of both footage, one imported the right way (720p24 easy setup) and one imported with the wrong way (720p60 easy set-up)

The only difference between the files are the file size. The orginal import is twice the file size of the correctly done import. I went into the property manager in FCP and noticed only two diffrences between the files.

The orginal Import has a vid rate of 59.94 fps and a data rate of 14.1 MB/sec
The Correct Import has a vid rate of 23.97 fps and a data rate of 5.9 MB/sec

Both files have
the same compressor (DVCPRO HD 720p60)
the same pixel aspect (HD 960x720)
the same frame size (960x720)
the same anamorphic (No)
the same etc......

Basically my question is this, since I deleted the orginal raw p2 data in the import que, can I still use clips imported in the 720p60 easy setup even though the footage was shoot in 720p24?

So far I have attempted to export the orginal imports with the correct vid rate and data rate wthin FCP using the apropriate easy setup. When I did this the file would natively playback in the timeline, and the data rate and fps matched the correctly imported clip, however the file size is still twice as big? I know this is probably alot to chew but if anyone could help me out or give any advice it would be greatly appreciated. This was my first time shooting in HD using the p2 workflow and I could really use some help. What should I do to salvage the clips? Re-importing the orginial p2 data is not a option because like a fool I delted it, all i ahve now is the orginal imported footage, imported with the wrong easy setup (720p60)Or has all hope been lost?

My life is in your hands, I repeat my life is in your hands.

Thanks.

I've done some more research and deterined that my problem is this.

I recorded in 720p24, however I imported the footage into FCP using a 720p60 easy setup. Is there anyway to convert the footage and/or are there any problems I should be aware of?

Just create a new sequence at the proper setting. The footage is the same; Import P2 is merely a digital copy of what is on the P2 card.

And crossgrade to FCP 5.1 (with the free upgrade to 5.1.2). There are known problems with P2 footage and FCP 5.0.4

I imported the footage into a 720p24 sequence, but the footage still isn't showing as natively rendered in the timeline. I attempted to export the 720p60 captured footage at the proper codec and it solved the render problem but now the file is twice as big as it should be. I am going to run into anymore problems?

p.s. I am running fcp 5.1.2 now, thanks for the help.

Easy setups should not affect the import format.

If you recorded in 720/24p and not 720/24pn, the footage is actually 720/60p with duplicate frames. So a direct import would be 720/60p. If you got 720/24p it would be because FCP has stripped the duplicate frames in during the import.

Have you tried using the Framerate converter on the 720/60p material?

I tried to use the FCP frame converter but I was unsure of some of the settings, mainly the "remove duplicate fames".

the footage was recorded in 720/24p and not 720/24pn. I have one orginal card still so I tried importing that footage using the 720/24p easy setup rather than the 720p60 setup I used the first time. And when I did so the footage showed appeared in the timleine as a natively rendered clip.

I then took the footage that was imported at 720p60 and exported it using the quicktime movie menu command set to 720p24. The footage showed up in the timeline correctly and there appears to be no difference between it and the correctly imported footage, except the footage that was exported from 720p60 is twice as big as the footage that was a straight 720/24p import.

Is this where the frame converter would come in handy? and if so what are the proper settings in FCP?

p.s. I just purchased your p2genie the other day, i'm looking foward to using it next shoot!!
