Be More Revelotionary on the RED Lens

I am new to this forum. If I post something inappropriate or redundant due to my ignorance, please put up with me.

Based on the features and pricing of the RED ONE camera, I was hoping the RED zoom lens would be a little more revolutionary. I was hoping RED can do a lot better in terms of lens design since the camera is so far advanced and offers so much bang for the bug compared to what the rest of the industry is offering.

For example, for any practical purposes of contemporary narrative film making, especially with the challenge of what B4 mount optics offers in HD cinematography, I wish a "standard" zoom lens for 35mm film production would have a focal length range from 16mm to 105mm that covers the most common focal lengths in a typical shoot.

While someone on the internet was mentioning that the RED camera has a nominal ISO rating at 160 which is quite low compared to current film stock or HD cameras, I’ll love my most used lens to have a maximum aperture of T2.3. So my dream lens would be 16-105mm T2.3.

I understand such a lens would be bulky and hard to make, hence cost a fortune. I'd settle for a compromise in EITHER the focal length range OR the max iris, but NOT 18-85mm T2.8. We really don’t have money rent super speed/ultra speed lenses or the time to change lenses often on set (somewhat spoiled by HD).

I don't know exactly how much a new Angenieux 17-102mm T2.9, a Techno-Cooke 18-90mm T2.3 or a Cooke 18-100mm T3 for Super 35 would cost. Someone in the know out there please shed some light. Maybe a price comparison will make me a happier customer. I have already reserved the camera and the lens, by the way.

RED people, I hope you listen and I hope it is still not too late to "upgrade” your lens design to help out poor souls like me.

Those lenses you mentioned are roughly $37,000 to $60,000.

The RED zoom is $8000.

HEY HEY HEY!

baquajim just made a nice discount for us all (Red zoom at 8k)

and U all have to bring it back up to 9,5K, what´s the matter with you???

;-)

I think it is a very usefull range, good speed and a great value. Would I like it cheaper, faster and 16 to 120 ? you bet... I would also like Jim's 959.

I don't know where the $8000 figure came from.

But still.... I think that is more than reasonable. Price, T Stop, Range. Sounds revolutionary to me.

I'd not worry about the ISO too much, as that's without any gain at all - most cameras gain up to get a "better" ISO. What we're talking here is the sensor, and that figure is still rough. Because of the low noise, you've got a couple of stops extra in the ISO, say 200, or 400 before you get down the already low noise level of a more normal camera.

I just bought a set of 8 Cooke Speed Panchros 35mm Prime lens to use with my REDDDDD package. I also bought an Angenieux 20-120mm T2.9 for about $2000.

I don't know if I'm allowed to do this, but I have no connection with visualproducts.com, but they do stock the same zoom glasses to which I'm referring. Good luck!

But arent they BNCR mount?
BINGO!

Cooke Speed Pancro
Series II Lens Set-All lenses in BNCR Mount

This is part of a dvxuser post from Mihai Meda from 4/09/06 :
you can use a mount adapter from almost any other mount to PL (c-mount, arri, bayonet) but you CANNOT adapt a BNCR mount lens to fit in a PL mount on the camera (you can do it vice-versa). That is the other reason a BNCR mount on the camera would be more than welcomed for a lot of us.
Visual Products does have a 7 day money back deal, BNCR may not be a part of the RED plan. That's a lot money to gamble.
Sorry mate.

Help me out here. This is a cinema lense? Breathe free and all? For under 2000 bucks in 35mm? Am I missing something or can this be a 35 mm solution for Red?

Sorry, I think you misunderstood me. I paid $2k for the zoom glasses ONLY and not the entire range. The PLs cost a heck of a lot more than that!. Hope this helps.

So the glass came with arri std mounts? Wish you had had included that in your first post. I have looked at the panchro's a few years back but balked at the BNCR mounts. Also, I hope you physically inspected the lenses. Circular cleaning marks and hairline scratches will be blatantly obvious at 1080p and downright distracting at 4k.

And based on my experience with modern DSLR sensors, you can use a great deal of gain and still have a clean image. Even the digital rebel is pretty clean up into the 400 iso range.

Well Gavin, no matter what format you use, introduce a little light down the the barrel and the aberrations WITH MOVING IMAGES become harder to ignore. I was just trying to offer advice based on my years as a commercial and network (multi-format) lighting cameraman and director.

What's the catch with that $1750 Angenieux 20-120mm T2.9 at Visual Products? That seems absurdly cheap for a PL-mount zoom. And Angenieux isn't even an off brand.
