25p 50fps - Frame Rate Converter - PAL LAND

Hi there

I'm trying to convert my 50fps footage using the Frame Rate Converter in FCP5.1 and it appears to only want to work with 59.94fps.

Is there anyone out there using the Vari Frame feature of the HVX in PAL Land?

I've used P2 Log to wrestle the MXF files into QuickTime and now want to convert the footage to slomo as it was shot on 50fps at 25p.

Would really like to use Vari Frames as its the whole point I purchased the cam :-(

Many thanks
Rory

Hi Rory,

You do know Apple is releasing the fcp update with vari fram rates in a couple of weeks or so right ?

Hi Matt

Yeah I saw Apple at IBC but thought you could still work with 25p using P2 Log software, but as I'm finding out you can't work with Vari Frame shots.

I have a shoot tomorrow that requires vari frames so waiting for Apple isn't an option and I thought P2 Log would help me out. Oh well $200 down the drain :-(

This industry amazes me how they sell stuff that doesn't work :-)

Many thanks
Rory

Can you just shoot 720/25PN for the variable frame rates. That stuff does work using the P2 log work around. Some one has previously posted the link to show you how to do it. I haven't done it using the frame rate converter in final cut but I did do it using the PN (native) mode. But it wasn't easy getting the correct workflow.

If you go to the P2 Log website there is a pdf download explaining how to work with the vari frame stuff. It converts it to an NTSC framerate to work with in real time in FCP and then you use Media Manager to reencode it back to PAL.

Hi Rory,

We have worked succssfuly with P2 Log and the HVX. There may be other ways to do what you want to do but I used cinema tools to batch convert the footage to 25fps. I cant remember the exact procedure off the top of my head but it was simply a matter of conforming the footage to a frame rate and selecting all the files I wanted conformed. The results are stunning. Plus you get audio. Yay.

I can confirm Cinema tools works.

Just do a batch conform (under file menu), it asks you for a clip in a folder, choose it, up pops a dialogue with the frame rate.

Choose 25

5 seconds later your folder of clips will all run at 25P.

P2 Log is your friend untill FCP 5.1.2 comes out...

FCP 5.1.2 DOES support import of 720p50 material.

You just can't edit in a 50 fps sequence yet.

The framerate converter is still only for 720p60 material, but Cinematools works fine.

Hey Mactrix.
It's a great guide, but what's up with that short 5.1.2 paragraph?

Under 4.1: "Too bad that the P2 import window doesn’t show any further clip information.
Also metadata access is still limited compared to P2 Log."

By right clicking in the headings bar you can bring up ALL meta data columns and turn them on/off
Also you actually have the ability to disable ch. 3,4 if they are unuseed etc.
