Question for Jan about a AVCHD DVX

I did not say we would not release an AVCHD camcorder. We will. We will not be releasing an HDV camcorder. What it will be in AVCHD we will have to wait and see.

Best,

Jan

Well, there it is.

Panasonic Broadcast just said they'll produce an AVC-HD camcorder.

No indication of when, or what it'll be... I'm lobbying for an AVC-HD DVX, but maybe they'll go with a smaller cam? Part of the appeal of AVC-HD is that the recording format (SD cards) is about 1/100th the volume of a DV tape (wild guess) so they might make something really, really small maybe?

I would like to think that Panasonic will make a venture into the territory of the Z1E, new canons etc.

At the moment they are not even competing in this section. You can say what you like about the HVX but it is not a rival to the HDV cams as they are not a rival to the HVX. Why?...............P2 is why. DVCproHD is why. The HVX, I believe, is on a higher place when it comes to production. It's worth paying the extra for relative ease of editing DVCproHD as opposed to HDV.....but only if you can afford it.

I agree that DVCProHD is a higher level and neccesitates a higher price. However, it's worth noting that many of us would rather shoot DV than HDV. Some of us, including many hollywood productions, simply find the interframe encoding of HDV unaccpetible. I might be able to stomach the 4:2:0 color space since it's no more compression than I was using in the DVX days but interframe encoding is a step backwards as far as motion is concerned and simply not worth it becuase of both the artifacting and the editing issues. Even if the HVX200 had an HDV option I wouldn't use it for that reason.

I used to think that P2 would be OK for corporate style stuff until my last project. Now i'll say this.....it was shot on DV with the DVX100. But, if I had wanted to shoot HD I would have liked to go with the HVX. Only problem being is that the interview shoot lasted for 55 minutes. You could say why not offload the cards half way through. Fair enough but, the interviewee was a 90 year old guy who had to endure a flight which he didn't enjoy to do the Scottish War Museum a favour. He obviously was not comfortable being in an elongated interview situation and I think mucking around with P2 cards would have made the situation worse. Still so many P2 drawbacks especially to those on a budget shooting large quantities of material.

If long shooting times are needed, I still think the FS-100 is a very viable solution, especially since it'll have native mode working by later this year. Ultimatly, it's not going to cost much more than it would be to get an HDV deck or a cheaper HDV camera would for catpure. Once again, I think a lot of this is about looking at the big picture as far as budget shooting goes. If I had bought an XLH1 for instance, already 3k more than the HVX200, I still would have had to get a Firestore since there are currently no decks or other cameras that 24f is compatible and I don't want to destroy my head (even budget filmmakers should know not to capture and offload with your good camera). JVC and Sony HD decks aren't much cheaper than an FS100 either. The bottom line is that you're going to have similar expense one way or another. Eliminating tape all together really does save a lot of money in the long run. I know it doesn't seem like it but I garuntee one will long for tapeless workflow the first time your head breaks down and reduces your camera to a 6k paperweight (Last I heard, the JVC can't even record to a Firestore without a tape in the drive also recording so it could still break down after a while).

Boy...I hope that the panny prototype is a decoy. In addition to falling out from the ugly tree and hitting every branch to the ground, she doesn't even look ergonomic for anyone half-way serious about using these as tools.

I'm guessing this is a total facade to hide the future product, they are only discussing actual tech specs with the public, but showing us nothing of the body. Who thinks they actually fit three CCDs in that little thing??? Plus the prism??? Nah, gotta be a marketing mule.

But it is exciting to see something...anything from panny these days. At least the silence is dead...

...

As I said below, it is a consumer product and not a tool for the serious professional.

Best,

Jan

Well there it is...we shouldn't be interested in AVC-HD if panasonic isn't either (on a semi-pro, pro level).

Obviously we've been asking the wrong questions. Who knows anything about the AVC Intra codec?

Either way, thanks again Jan, you rock.

Jusst build a DVX100 with native 16:9. Put a little slot on it to run AVC-HD. Then the people who want a DVX100 with 16:9 can have it and you can still have the DVX100 with 4:3.

I like the dual DVX minidv/SD card slot. Like a trimmed down HVX in the HD department.

I give alot of credit to Panny for staying away from HDV format just for the recording time benefits. If a new Panasonic camera could not give the same image quality as the DVX/HVX than what is the point!

If AVC-HD is the answer to longer recording times with Pannys image quality...... cheers to that!

Odds are that the next DVX will also use P2 cards. Panansonic is pushing those too much to have only one model utilize them. I seem to recall panny prototyping a "$3000 prosumer P2 camcorder" a long time back. I don't think the HVX falls into either the $3000 or the prosumer range.

The DVX was a big seller for panny, they aren't gonna just let the model number, word-of-mouth marketing, reputation, etc. just die out. We'll see another DVX and it will support the broadcast format of the future (HD 1080). The only guess is when and what codec. But my bet is that it'll still have P2.

It's been about three months since I asked about a AVC-HD DVX. I don't know anything more than I did then. No news at all. Very depressing.

Does ANYONE know ANYTHING about this camcorder? WILL IT EVEN COME OUT THIS YEAR? Any rumours, guesses, or crystal ball readings are welcome. I'm desperate.

Thank you and goodnight.

In October Panasonic will put a $1,000 rebate on the DVX100b, with 10 tapes, and all the software they now offer. Plus Barry's book. Plus a new DVD called "shooting the DVX100 with Barry"

Then Panasonic early in 2007 will anounce the 16G P2 card for $99.

I finally buy a camera this year and make a indie for $125 and it is the surprise hit of the year making a cool $100 million at the box office.

Well that is what I'm seeing in my crystal ball!!!

I can live with a DVX on P2 only because of my HVX gear that is already purchased. I still think that an SD would in the long run give the camera better sales.

P2 scares away many buyers into the arms of Canon and Sony. Budget wise I can understand.

For me if it is not a panny 24p image I would not bother spending the money for HDV and stick with my DVX. I was lucky enough that my wife agrees and I have an HVX.

Lets hope Panny can fill the gap on a consumer and a pro-sumer level.

Something tells me you don't windex your crystal ball!!!

Well, those are decent. Just as long as you don't get one of those grey market crystal balls. Half the time you're paying waaay too much for all the accessories, like magic wand, and quija, but when it comes down to it...they never even send you the crystal ball you ordered in the first place.

That's why I always buy my crystal balls from an authorized dealer. That way I keep my US warranty, ain't that right Jan?

Haha, it's late.

No, there it isn't. :) You read too much into that answer.

She said that THAT PARTICULAR camera was a consumer home-movie toy. In other posts she's said that Panasonic Broadcast will be building an AVC-HD product. But this isn't it.

Which is why there's a lot more than one model using them. SPX800, SPC700, HPC2000... their big cameras are transitioning to P2 rapidly. The HVX is the only sub-$10,000 camera using them so far, but it's far from being the only model using them.

muwahahahaha, you fell into my trap perfectly...

My plan was to totally misquote jan, then espouse inaccurate information - so that you, the great Barry Green would enter this thread and correct me!!!

Hahah, my powers in mind control are amazing!!!

No but seriously, thanks for fixing my errors, I don't wanna be misinforming this informational database.

Apples and oranges I know...

But Camcorderinfo.com has reviewed the sony HDR-UX1 with CMOS and AVCHD.

"[SIZE=-1][SIZE=-1][SIZE=-1][SIZE=-1][SIZE=-1][SIZE=-1]There was noise in everything we shot, bright light and low light, indoor and outdoor, against flat backgrounds and against detailed shots. The noise did not seem to cost the camcorder much in its fine detail rendering, but there’s no way you won’t notice it. We saw compression artifacts in the footage like blockiness and poor handling of color gradients. It's really too bad because the picture is so sharp and so well-colored, that it isn't compressed as well as it could be.This does not bode well for the first generation of AVCHD, and forced us to factor that into the score."
