Trailer. 25 min DVX horror short "Eddie Loves You"

For anyone who's interested I've finally got my trailer for this finished.

www.darklineonline.co.uk/ely.html

You can access low/medium quicktime or Windows Media versions on the page.

Yes, the quality is bad, but it's meant to be. I even ran this off to VHS a few times to capture that late 70's/early 80's 'banned' feel.

Or you can go to the main page www.darklineonline.co.uk and access some of my work from there. (temp layout)

Hope you enjoy.

Thanks for the kind words :-)

For anyone in the area, Eddie Loves You will also be showing at the Eerie Horror Film Festival, and Rhode Island Horror Film Festival.

I accidentally discovered that by reencoding movies with a lower bitrate I could come close to achieving this look which I'm desperately going for. However, the look you got is superior and dead-on.

I'd really appreciate it if you would tell me exactly how you went about getting it by running it to vhs.

Great stuff, loved the narration.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Streamline, the process wasnt tricky at all. But I did apply a bit of cc to give it a real milky bad telecine look. On top of that is an old movie effect, typical itchy scratchy flickery plugin. Then the whole thing was ran off to VHS via the composite output. Then recaptured via composite too. I did this process one more time so I had a real badly ghosted image (not easy to see on an mpg). Emulating that banned movie feel I used to watch in the 80's :-)

Finally the text overlays were done in Combustion and I applied a minor shake to it (giving the effect the pin registration was off) The red text really bleeds badly once it's gone through the VHS recapture.

Hope that helps

I'll be the dick on the thread and say I found it just immature and therefore I wouldn't watch it. You took a concept that could be funny for a few jokes and made it into a however long minute trailer, which is fine, but it dissuaded me from being even slightly interested.

Good editing

i thought the trailer itself was great, you captured the look perfectly and I thought the jokes were funny. My only critisim is that it didn't make me want to watch the movie. If anything I would just tell my friends to watch this cool trailer. I have no idea what the movie is about or what I'd be getting myself into.

Not sure what you could do about this, and again I like it as a short, short film but Im not sure how effective it is at it's intended purpose.

the fox -thanks for commenting. everyones entitled to their opinion. I guess I am a little immature! I doubt you would like the film fox - stay clear!

I think if you were an old school horror buff then you might have more sympathy for it. There are a lot of homages to movies trailers in there. Maniac, the brood, dawn of the dead, Last house on the left. Hence why its a minute or so...... that doesnt make it good....lol. But I have a lot of fond memories of them all and the style they were done in.

Cheesesailor - insteresting comment. I hate those trailer that give away too much of the film.. the main concept i wanted to keep completely under wraps. Especially as it's a short film. The last thing you want is your short being outdone by the trailer itself. For good or bad.... So from the start I didnt show anything of the film but perhaps showed some of the style of the short. All I can say is if you liked the trailer you'd probably like the film.

thanks for bothering to comment

I liked your trailer a lot. I liked the video quality, the narration, and the text. It all seems very authentic. The only thing I didn't like was the fake dust/scratches/hairs on the footage. I just think it was too much, not real looking enough. Overall awesome vid! The look of the video reminded me a bit of Evil Dead 2. Not exactly sure why.

Hi Jeans

Hear what you say about the dust and scratches. I didnt think it looked too bad considering it's a real time plugin for my editing card :-)

The only reason I got the trailer done was for the film festivals, and linking my web page to them. So it was done as quick as I could as the pages were already up without the link to my film. So i could have spent longer on the damage look but thought it was ok for what the trailer was trying to do.

I like the brood, but prefer the trailer for it :-))))

Just found out we're in the New York Horror Fest today.

Please come and see it if you are in the area!

I like the trailer. The voice of the narrator is classic. The images are great, the concept is good, the execution is fine. My one worry is that the short will have a hard time living up to the trailer. You'll have to make it *really* funny/creepy to make it work, IMHO, it's not enough to simply have an extended version of the trailer. You've hit a lot of big names, and yes, the homages are clear... but that also means you've got a lot to live up to (camp up to). However so far, so good.

Thanks OldCorpse.

The film itself, well, I haven't given too much away with the trailer. I think the worst thing I could have done is to show all my best bits in a fast paced action sequence. I think the film is very different to the trailer, but please see it and let me know :-)

Adrian the VO artist is Steve Boergadine. You can reach him at :[boergadine@yahoo.com]. I can't discuss price as it's different for each project. All I can say is I was very happy with him, very good value and very open to changes.
