New iMac 24" as HVX Editing station...?

I used my G4 Mac Mini 1.25ghz w/ 256mb of ram to do some SD editing , and used DVD Studio pro on it as well to master the DVD. This is when i was having probs with my now sold Powermac Dual G4 1.25ghz Mirror Drive door system. So , maybe not HD, but for damn sure SD. I bet it pwns SD on the new Core Duo's. :)

ya, im watching this thread like a chat room, i know. sorry.

Totally understand. I'm just letting the peeps know whats getting ready to come out (and then you guys can decide when and how to spend your money).

The Quad Core (which is called the Core 2 Quadro) is an 80% increase over the new Core 2 Duo that they just started using in the iMacs.

Here is a full review of the processor. I'm linking to the Video Benchmarks page of the review since thats what most people are interested in. Scroll down a bit and see the encoding time for 1080p HD footage. Thats where this processor really shines.

Thanks Polar.

Ill probably be getting the iMac tomorrow and then sell it to upgrade around april next year.

It wasnt the fastest rendering with special FX and compressor, but i was editing live shows together with multiple streams and some name bar overlays, then just exporting over night to Mpeg 2.

Ive even got the 5.1.1 on there right now just to see how it would run, im a curious werido. Deleted it off that tiny HDD i got in mine, but it was only 300 bucks and that was about a year ago :)

I edit and kick ass in editing on a screaming Macbook Pr

Keep it a little more professional if you might.

How are you getting eduational pricing? You need to qualify for that.

Also the iMac has only a single FW bus and no way to add a second one, or an external additional SATA drive.

Best wishes

Christ Cynic,

Why didn't you post this in a Mac forum, or at least under hardware?

If you want to work with an HD Cam, spend $$$ for HD peripherals already.

- John

btw - Quad 2.5 takes a half hour to compress a 1 minute HD clip at 720x.

Ya i know david, but i was kind of baffled by this post, and still sort of am and its motive. ????

Anyways, the 24" has 2 firewire 400 ports as well as a firewire 800. Missing out on the sATA is one of the downfalls, but its not a huge thing for me to miss out on. I have nothing invested in sATA drives or devices yet, and its not like HVX footage is going to get harder and harder to edit on requiring faster computers.

Let me unbaffle it...

"Why didn't you post this in a Mac forum, or at least under hardware?" :

Being that your post has to do specifically with Apple products not related to comments or news specific to this area of the dvxuser forum, this comment was meant to direct you to the area of the dvxuser forum corresponding to this type of hardware question.

"If you want to work with an HD Cam, spend $$$ for HD peripherals already."

It seems a number of people considering to purchase and use an HVX200 don't necessarily cost out key peripherals in terms of work flow for quality output. You already know the Mac Pro & ACD will do exactly what you need right? If your MacBook Pro is tried tested and true for your workflow, why not stick with it?

That's my given name.

"btw - Quad 2.5 takes a half hour to compress a 1 minute HD clip at 720x".

A real world example of another Mac's (not on your list) performance when exporting 60 secs of DVCPRO HD 720P24P to 720x394 with H.264 for web. 4 Gigs ram, FCP 5.1.1 from internal sata drives. Did it yesterday. Thought you may want to know if you hadn't worked on that Quad before.

Why dont i post this in a Mac Forum?

Because i want opinions and thoughts from people that i know. Not random people, but people Ive seen post before and dont have to do research on to understand where their ideas and insight are coming from.

Is it that upsetting to you that i didnt post it in "Hardware" just 2 buttons down, maybe it should be in hardware, thats not a big deal though to keep harping on this. If you want to police the boards for mis placed topics, be my guest.

I did cost out my workflow, and can afford my workflow. Im not cheap, theres a reason i can comfortably afford either system that i want (mac Pro or iMac 24") the reason being i dont make frivolous purchases. Theres a difference between paying for the gear that you need and getting gouged for over priced gear. Also i dont think im going to need the 4 processor power for anything in the future. I cant imagine needing that much power in a system, so it seems like just extra money i can stow away for next year when i decide to upgrade again. Im not looking for a "cheap" easy cop out on buying pro gear. I just saw something that looks like an amazing computer, that might be too cheap to be a good buy. I have never asked for help in a Mac purchase in my life, and i dont really need too much help, i was just looking to see if someone spotted something about this computer that maybe i over looked. And after these posts from you, i dont think ill be asking for any "help" again. I dont think i need to explain myself for why this wasnt posted on a different website, or for posting in the wrong area.

I am sticking with my Macbook Pro, if you read again, youll see that i would like a home station for my partner to be able to work on when im at work, and a system i can work on when at home as well. Working soley from my laptop may be become a bigger problem very soon in the future.

"-John thats my given name"

Now you are just being sarcastic and I know i have been a real jerk on the boards before, but i am long since past that and doin my best to post topics that maybe will help others, as well as post in topics answering questions to the best of my knowledge to help people with their problems/questions and whatever it may be, and also be curtious, funny and friendly at the same time. What are you doing lately on the boards?

The last part is partly useful info, if you didnt just vaguly state it in your first post. Couldnt even finish the rez that you exported too in the first post . Just "720x"

can we move on now please.

Also, just to clarify... The processor I am talking about is the new Quad Core "Core 2 Quadro" processor. It has 4 cores on one single processor. The Mac Pro's say they are Quad core because they have 2 dual core Core 2 Duo processors (totaling 4 cores when you combine the two processors together).

thanks, i already knew that, but its good for clarification. Im gunna get the iMac 24" but now deciding on how/where to buy and use my student discount (my brothers) and if i want to wait the extra 3 or 4 days to get the upgraded video card, or get it NOW at an apple store with the stock video card.

Well, a fun thread read indeed! :)

Yes, I too am pondering the purchase of a 24" iMac, it just sounds perfect! Core 2 Duo, 1920x1080 screen, decent graphics, and the capacity for more than 2gb of RAM (3gb max supposedly), what more could you ask for as a good starting machine to tide you over until Core 2 Quadro's? I definitely recommend the iMac for you, Cynic, it'll definitely do what you're asking for and more I'm sure.

I however, *looks over at crusty ol' Canon GL1*, need to think about a new camera and maybe an M2 before I need anything computer related, I'm darn sure my 1.4ghz G4 Mac Mini will tide me over while I learn FCP in the meantime.

Ya, like i said earlier, i was / am able to edit SD no problem on my Mac Mini 1.25ghz G4 with only 256mb ram! YOull be fine, ya those GL's get kinda crusty huh?! I think im prertty rusty with it by now, havnt used one in a while!

It has better than decent graphics though Jack. That card can put out some pretty decent numbers in Quake 4, Half Life 2 and if you upgrade for only a little more than a 100 bucks to the 7600 GT with 256mb it will scream in those games with all the HDR effects and what not!
Only about an hour or so before i leave the office, doesnt look like ill be gettin the mac today, the apple store for Academy of Arts still doesnt work, and i can get the discount at the Apple Store, BUT i want to custom config with the better video card.

Well Cynic - I want to thank you for asking the question.
(And I don't care where it should be posted 'coz I'm reading about it here.)

I'm in a similar to boat to you - was all set on the Mac Pro with full bells and whistles (AJA card etc;) and this 24" iMac has caused me to pause and look at some alternatives.
I was really hoping Steve would bring the updated MBP into the equation today - oh well, that's Apple for ya.

This iMac with an MXO - really could be a viable alternative to the tower route.

No way would I want the updated MBP today! I need this thing to be the top of the line for a while for my own comfort! LOL. Seriously though that would have been sweet. New Core 2 Duo MBP's?! I probably would have bought another and then sold this guy on the market place or craigslist for about 1900.

whats MXO?

The Matrox MXO is an external box that converts a DVI signal to HD-SDI for connecting to a professional HD monitor. There's a lot more about it on the Matrox site and it's being talked about all over the place.

It's the luck of having a strong currency - base price for the tower around 4600 mighty kiwi - add ram 4 gig will cost aorund 1500 to 1800 - add x1900 card around 800 - add Aja LHe around 3200 + bob 500.
Grim total - 10700.00 + tax

It's a conspiracy i tell ya ...

edit: one thing i noticed on the 24" iMac spec page was the power to the fw bus. Was wondering what the implication might be ... anyone smart enough to clue me in ?
http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html

"Peripheral connections
17-inch and 20-inch models
Two FireWire 400 ports; 8 watts shared
24-inch model
One FireWire 400 and one FireWire 800 port; 15 watts shared"

I've never seen Apple make that distinction before - aleays been just the types of ports and # of them. Never the power before.
