Has anyone figured out how to transfer back to the P2 on a Mac?

Hey Everyone,

So I just shot a film on the HVX, and we were downloading the P2 cards onto my lacie drive through a macbook pro that runs mac osx and windows. I'm trying to import the cards into FCP and 2 cards are coming up as corrupt. I think someone tried opening a couple of the files in windows which would obviously cause a problem. I figured if I could get the files back onto the P2 and then re-copy them to the mac, everything would be ok, but I forgot that the cards come up as read-only on a mac.

Has anyone found the solution to this yet? If not, does anyone have any other suggestions on how I can resolve this problem? I'm about to loose 2 1/2 scenes! Help

Thanks,

Suzanne

Opening the files in Windows wouldn't cause a problem. The Mac just doesn't work 100% reliably with P2/MXF files all the time. Try re-importing them, or try importing the cards through P2 Log and they may work.

And yes, the getting-it-back-to-the-cards-from-the-Mac is yet another Mac limitation that I wish people would quit settling for. There's no reason for it. Demand better, folks! The PC lets you copy files back to a card, why wouldn't the Mac?

Can you take the drive over to a PC and do the copy there? That would work if you can do it.

Barry,

I don't quite understand the "copy back to P2 card" limitation you're speaking of. (Camera is out of town at this moment so I can't test this). But didn't Evin do a "print to video" out of FCP to the p2 card over firewire for the video presentation at the NYC bootcamp. If so, then doesn't that prove you can? Is it a permissions problem that needs to be changed on the volume or what?

You can set up the cam and firewire to print to the card out of a FCP sequence.

I don't see why this is a limitation of the Mac.

Two things: one is rendering out an MXF file back to the card, which could be done in 24pN or 30pN mode. Mac can't do that.

Second is that the Mac requires the card to be write-protected when used in the five-slot reader, at least. You cannot copy files back onto the card (such as if you had a virtual card on a hard disk and wanted to copy that virtual card back onto a real card). PC imposes no such limitation, Mac does for some reason.

Don't know about copying back to the card from the Finder in a G4 or to a P2 Store or in the camera -- can you do that? PC can, but for some reason I thought the Mac wouldn't allow it.

I am a bit outraged that Panasonic doesn't create the same software tools for the Mac as they do for the PC - aren't we important enough?

The HVX200 mounts as a read-only Firewire device so it's impossible to copy anything back to it or modify the contents.

The cardbus driver is Read/write,so you can actually copy back to the card on a Powerbook using the cardbus slot....

Is there any good reason for that though (it being read-only)? I just see it as a limitation. If I want read-only I'll write-protect the card, right?

I don't know if it's apple's doing or panasonic's doing, but I think it's a bit goofy and I think it should be read/write at all times.

But what are you copying?

You can copy a FCP self contained export, but that's a QT file, not a MXF folder that the cam can play back.

I tried importing them in 5.1, and it's still saying they are corrupt or incomplete. I tried backing up my drive today and it wouldn't even let me drag and drop them because the mac is saying that the files can't be read. I downloaded the free trial of the p2 log, but it will only convert the first file in the folder, and both of the first files in the problem folders are fine, and I'm not about to shell out $200 for a program that I'm not sure will work. Help!

David,
I know Evin did it (did a print to video from FCP to p2 card and play it back on the camera out to a projector) at the NYC boot camp (Barry was there so I'm not crazy).

I've been able to take edited 720 24pn video from FCP 5.1.1 and get it back onto the P2 cards for full rez viewing.

In fact, it was so easy I don't even remember how I did it.

When I get home, I'll try again, and post my method here. But it is very doable on a Mac with FCP.

Yes.. it is very doable.. I copied the max lenght.. I think about 8 minutes. You have to capture to the camera and have it be in the 59.98 framerate. Barry had info on that a long time ago. That's the only bummer... I could only get like 8 minutes onto the two cards...

Looked friggin great.. But seriously, when are the HD recorders and players going to start coming out.. Haven't seen much about this at all... How many people think that quicktime downloads and wmv and divix will be a viable distribution format... or atleast a great intermiate... Seems like it's taking forever to get the blueray out and the HD-DVDs... Almost as long as the Cinemek adpater and the cineporter... Good thing I'm not holding my breath on either of those bad boys....
