MXF to FCP to Combustion back to FCP, what aspect ratio?

hi everyone i'm not an editor but my visual fx guy has been driving me nuts about the following, I couldnt find anything by searching so here goes:
We edited most of the project in FCP but then had some visual effects done in Combustion. We converted the MXF files with Cineform, then imported the avi into Combustion.
Q1. What do we need to output to, to get them back into FCP?

In FCP, our settings for aspect ratio and pixel aspect ratio were set to HD 960x720, this is what my DP recommended.
So my vfx guy is confused what settings he should use to out put to, i.e. he imported the converted files into Vegas, and Vegas showed that the aspect ratio is SQUARE. I found conflicting threads on the forum, some saying it is square, some saying it isn't.... so what to do now? I showed the settings to my vfx guy, he just says: that's not an answer. it must be 1.333 or 1.7777 or square etc....so...
Q2. Is the aspect ratio square or not?
I hope I still make sense without all the proper jargon,
any and all help appreciated!
Martin

To make it simple for everyone you could just do the effects at 1280x720 square and then re-scale when you import into FCP.

960x720 is 1.333333
1280x720 is square

Note that some codecs will present the square format to the RGB application (eg. The 720p codec presents a 1280x720 frame to AE, not the real compressed format at 960x720)

thanks!

thanks!

thank you for your feedback, have passed it on and seems to make sense now!
