A posting on the LAFCPUG from an Apple Pro Apps employee confirms that in a month, v5.1.2 will indeed have 720p25 P2 support. Here is the full posting taken from here:

At IBC this week we demonstrated Final Cut Pro 5.1.2-- a maintenance release that provides compatibility with a variety of cameras and devices as well as a significant number of stability and reliability improvements that customers have requested. Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 will be available via Software Update for registered users of Final Cut Pro 5.1 within the next 30 days.

Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 includes RT profiles for the latest Apple Mac Pro and iMac hardware.

This release provides the following format compatibility:

- SONY XDCAM HD: Adding 1080 25P and support for native 18- and 35Mbit VBR MPEG HD. Support now includes
- 1080i 50/60, 1080p 24/25/30.
- Native 25Mbit CBR, 18- and 35Mbit VBR MPEG HD for HD
- Native IMX 30 for SD

- PANASONIC: 720 25P from P2 devices. Support now includes
- 1080i 50/60, 720p 24/24N/25/25N/30 form P2 cards

- PANASONIC: 1080pA 24 (Advanced Pulldown) now supported via FireWire from AJ-HD1200A

- PANASONIC: more reliable P2 import dialog with ability browser, mark, and ingest in the background.

- CANON: 1080p 24/25 HDV
- JVC: 720p 24/25 HDV

Other stability and reliability improvements:

- SCOPES AND MONITORS. Improved accuracy; scopes can now sample every video line. Scope will also update in real-time during video playback.
- BWF compatibility
- Improved edit-to-tape accuracy for D5
- Compatibility with insert editing to audio channels 5-12 on decks
- Now compatible with some FxPlug filters
- Gamma control for imported graphics
- Media Manager is now more reliable
- EDL and Cinema Tools lists
- XML for developers
- Metadata preservation in QT files

-Paul from Apple

BWF support is huge, although my buddy Andreas Kiel has spent years developing BWF2XML, this built in support will be a very welcome workflow enhancement for a lot of people.

Preservation of QT metadata is a bit ambiguous as is the Media Manager mention - will have to wait for the 'What's New' to really find out what the actual changes are.

Well done Apple, lots of great sounding improvements and finally 720p25 support - thank you. Looking forward to this release in a big way.

At last!

I have been using image products workaround in the meantime, and am just finishing a small project in the next week.

Next project directly with FCP. Great news indeed. I'll be checking software updates every 5 minutes now! :)

This is the best fracking news i have had since i found out my HVX was waiting at the post office for me last week. All my dreams have been answered and the ability to shoot 50fps is a huge plus. Apple have come through in a big way.

I saw the beta yesterday at the Apple booth at IBC.
The new Panasonic P2 import window is VERY impressive.
You got almost all the features from P2 log inside the window> logging, player, multiple cards etc. very, very good. And it actually keeps track of what you have imported....

that's what i'm talking about! Go Apple! nice, we don't even need a new license for each computer.

Couple of questions.....

Will this be a free 'universal' upgrade via software update or a Mactel only update?

What/is there any metadata support in this release?

Also out of interest where does this leave HDLog?..... has Apple killed the golden goose???
cheers

Yes universal. You need the 5.1.x version to update.
And the best thing is that it will be a free downloadable update, not $199......

Best news i've herd regarding the HVX and our beloved fcp work flow.
P2 log is really going to have to re-think it's pricing now.
This should be a sticky for sure.

"improved native p2 support"
That's what it says on hdforindies. Can somebody verify native p2 support. That line is just a little weird. you can't have improved native support if you didn't have native support.
This is potentially very exciting. Can someone please give a definite verify that 5.1.2 will have native p2 support? No converting, meaning I will be able to drop mxf files on the timeline?

Anders -- any renaming capabilities?

This sounds very nice, but im not sure if this means that there will be a native mxf support, like edius, and i dont want any quicktime/filesize doubling process, otherwise fcp would be a killer if theres native support!

Ok, just dropped in at Apple to get some more details. THIS THING ROCK!!!!

Window is now non-modal
It now functions like the log & capture window. You can have it open at all times while you edit.
Think of it like a second browser view. (a bit like iPhoto really with rolls and a list of contents.)

Automatic joining of spanned clips!
When you have more cards open in the import window FCP will automatically jopin spanned clips, andd will tag incomplete spans with ''Clip Incomplete''

Batch Rewrapping
FCP will still rewrap the MXF files into Mov files, but it works as a background process now so you can continue to edit or log other clips. You can also just drag a clip to the browser to rewrap and import a clip into a project.

Full renaming and logging tools
You can now choose a new name for the Rewrapped files. If you delete the mov's you can use the normal ''capture'' command to rewrap from the XMF files. FCP will remember the original clip name!

Full viewer and JKL keys, IN-OUT points
Very smooth playback at all speeds, you can select what part of the clips that are Rewrapped to save some time and diskspace.

Enable-disable tracks
You can choose which tracks that are inclided in the Mov's: Video, A1, A2, A3, A4....of cause this setting is per clip!

Full metadata support
All metadata is shown in the clip list and is included in the Mov's. FCP does not support this in the Browser yet, but it will be there in the files when it gets implemented. Also It would be possible to write a simple Spotlight plugin to tap into the Metadata inside the Mov's

Search Field
You can narrow down the clips by using the built in search field. search all metadata etc....

Many thanks Anders,
With all this info your really getting me excited.
I need to get out more lol

Anders:

1. When you speak of "window" what do you mean? Is it the p2 import dialog box?

2. When you speak of "rewrap" are you saying that you can drag the mxf file from the modal dialogue box directly into the bin or sequence?

3. By "rewrap" do you mean "unwrap?"

4. Does the modal import box basically function like p2 log so you can log and "capture" using it directly from a p2 card?

Whoohoo! I just decided not to buy P2 log (because of the price). Finally, I win one!
P.S.: Sorry, Eliot. My heart goes out to you.
