Photos of the screen during the 4K show - Shot with a Digi Rebel XT, nothing but re-compression through photoshop...

Gum Girl: Check out the detail on her skin texture

The Porsche: Thedynamic range of RED, even projected totally blew away what my camera could shoot. You could see TWICE as much on the screen - the whoel studio floor in the background!

Closer shot of the Porsche: Check out those highlights!

There's a brochure here from RED that has a nice big print of the watch shot. I obviously don't have a scanner here, however I took some detail photos anyway..
I can't get teh full frames up right now, but here a cropped shot of the center of that watch photo: Check out the texture behind the 10 on the lower right!

Note: That's a Printed image then re-photographed. So it's still far form what RED delivers.

That's all i can get up now. I will post a bigger set in about 8 hours.

Great work Mikko... thanks for the Report.

The Porsche shot was one of my favorites.. Pretty frickin incredible that a 1k 1 foot away from a cutter beig blasted isnt blown out.

Thanks Mikko. Footage wise, even with a still pic of the screen, the detail in her face is promising. Can't wait to see a high rez clip when Jim gets back. Keep 'em coming, though. We need something to keep us from buying an expensive ticket to Amsterdam...

RED # wish I was higher

You can't see any pixels on that projection. Except for with your camera. It's great how high resolution the Red One is.

remember as well.. that projection was COMPRESSED... and it was also Downrez from 5k to 4k. :)

Great work Mikko.. cant wait to see what you come back with tomorrow.

The very cool thing about that Porsche shot...

When we were doing the color on that shot, we stressed the footage quite a bit, just to see what would happen. With typical video, the highlights on the flag in front of the light would just roll down uniformly - there is typically little dynamic room in video highlights. But when we rolled down Gain, it was a nice, smooth rolloff... there was a *ton* of detail in the highlights.

To be honest - dark shots are relatively easy to make look good. Granted, the RED footage looks amazing in darks, but so do most digital cameras when lit and shot very well.

But it's the Porsche, and the detail in the flame flares on the cigar shots that really give away some of what the sensor is capable of.

When we rolled down the highs on the Porsche and watched that nice smooth curve, the colorist - a guy who does film telecine day in and day out - turned to me and quietly said, "man... that's film response... this is *not* video at all..."

When we rolled down Gain on the lit cigars - same thing. It was a very cool moment when we were all looking at that...

Just out of curiosity, were there any shots that didn't make it to the final presentation? If there were, could you tell us why?

Yes, there was a lot of footage that was edited down to the final presentation.

They didn't make it for the same reason that take 3 is better than take 2 - the preference and eye of the client. The RED team simply liked the shots that were in the final better than all the rest.

There were some outdoor shots, for instance, that I thought were incredible... but at the end of the day, the RED team decided what they thought worked and what did not, and what would cut together well and what would not. :)

outside shots

I heard some people on other sites bitching about not seeing outside shots. That is not really fair because the Red team didn't have time to set up the Mysterium to film in day light. I am sure that once they do, the images will be spectacular. I hope that by the next convention RED goes to, they will show some outside footage. When is the next convention? Is it too soon to ask that queston?
Jim warned about some dead pixels. I didn't hear anyone comment about them, which means there probably were none. That is great. It is also great that there is no digital noise. That really impresses me.

"heard some people on other sites bitching about not seeing outside shots"

IMO if there were outdoor shots they would still be complaining ..
all goes back to how one looks at it ..
is the glass half full? or half empty ?

perhaps US with reservations see a full glass ...

Very cool thanks for keeping us up to date with all the RED going on's. I love that Shot. It just amazes me that it is not blowing out the front of that board and the car and then on top to that you can still see every detail in the car. WOW.

exteriors are on the shot list next.. dont worry... as soon as the camera is able to go outside it will.
