Best option for recording 3-3 1/2 hours of footage

This weekend I will be recording a wrestling event using two HVX200. I don't have any p2 cards, and I think I'd have to have far too many cards to record this. The show will be live, and some of the matches will go longer than 20 minutes.

I'm wondering if I should record straight into final cut pro on my G5 at the show. Would this be the best option? Also, can you record in 1080 mode? If anyone could help this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

With no P2 cards and not totally trusting FCP Capture Now, your best option is to rent a DVCPRO HD deck (1200A or the new 1400) and just stream to tape.

I've recorded long events (3-hour operas, etc) straight to FCP on a PowerBook without problems (this was in 720/30P, for the record). This using a Glyph external FW drive...

You definitely can record long-form directly to a PB. I'm just a stodgy old guy with many natural suspicions.... one of them is FCP's capture now. There is no question that the technology permits it and that folks have even been successful. It is just a bit too edgy for my taste.

seanconnery: im interested about the promotion you are shooting for. I also work for a wrestling promotion, but have yet to find a firm ground for pricing as far as shooting a 2 HVX shoot yet. Ive done extensive testing on my Macbook Pro for the wide angle shoot to catpure to, the ringside shoot would be done to a fire store 100. I used capture Now in FCP 5.1.1 and was able to easily capture 1/2 hour of 1080i 60i footage raw to an external USB 2.0 hard drive. Matches usually run about 8-15 minutes, main events run around 25.

Ive been in the rasslin business for a while, so if you need any pointers just ask.

Get disk full message after 5 min.

Get disk full message after 5 min.

Get disk full message and stopped capture after 5 min of direct capture thru my MBpro to lacie external HD using capture now on fcp. I then do a recapture now until another 5 min lapses. Any way to improve this for non stop capture at 720p setting on the HVX. I don't want to partition the HD.

Disk full? Are you sure you're really capturing to the external drive? And... um... is it full? After the error is the 5 min. of footage available? And, if so, are you saying you can capture many 5-minute chunks and have them all available? Or is each 5-minutes discarded before you're able to capture the next 5 min?

The footage is directed to the HD. Yes if I get a "Disk full" the footage is not lost.
I just click ok then do a apple 8 then do another 5 min and do another capture/ All the captures save. Sometime I compensate by pressing escape before the 5 min is up. Then I have the curser near the capture icon to start up capturing right away again. Nothing get lost but the untitled QuickTime files mount up. The footage looks fantastic. Even seems better than P2 captured footage.

Yup, Final Cut Pro reports "disk full" when it hits a filesize of 2GB while capturing to a FAT32 partition.

(It's a quicktime issue that it is 2GB and not the full <4 GB)

So I guess what your saying is that my HD is partitioning itself to 2GB during capture
even though I didn't format the external HD to my HVX200?

I nor any of my clients has ever had problems with Capture Now. I'd totally trust it if you have it configured properly.

As for the 5 minute limit, don't capture to a FAT32 drive, if FCP is doing the capture, go to an Apple formatted drive, problem solved.
