Sony Vs. Red? Sony's early response to Red?

Have you seen a 2K projector ? What's it like in comparison ?

I'd love to have a Barco 2K to preview RED's 2K (scaled) footage on. Yet, I don't think that they will come down in price enough by the time RED arrives --- unless more companies jump on the 2K, 4K projector bandwagon.

Yes- I've watched many films on the Christie CP2000 2K at the USC Digital Cinema Lab theater in Hollywood. And that looked awesome too- but highly dependent on the source. Wizard of Oz digitized from 3-strip Technicolor actually looked pretty nice. Cars from original digital 2K files just looked unreal. So I would imagine native 4K on a 4K projector would be almost more than the eye could handle. :)

Jarred! Come on! The suspense is killing us! We got all upset this morning when we heard the bad news. Now you say it's been resolved and none of us have got a clue as to what happend. Jim? Jarred's being a closed book, we need info from you.

I can't wait till I screen my RED footage on a 4K projector, even if it's just 15 minutes for 1/2 hour at a post place.

Are you going to ibc, Noah ?

And auditoryvisuals, it really doesn't matter how they resolved it, IMHO.What's important is that it's settled.

Hmmm. I hope that people are sure about what they are saying. No one who has ever dealt with Sony thinks this is beyond them.

Well, you can not stop a BILLIONAIRE from getting ahold of a 4k projector. Especially with a few days leeway. Connections and money are everything. If Mr. J wants to throw $ at it, the problem is solved. I'm sure he'd rather not, but the option is there.

Also, as was mentioned, a 2k projection will still look fierce.

This will be good for PR for the event. Will Red show 4k or not? What will Sony do? Can the underdog overcome the Evil Empire? Will a rogue Sony Rep shut off the power in the building at the moment of truth? ;-)

And Jan laughed when I said people were tired of Sony and Panasonic doling out the "resolution crumbs" LOL. Someone has shown up with the whole cake and Sony is trying to shut down the party.

I'm surprised Sony hasn't put pressure on the Mysterium sensor manufacturer to "delay". It must be a company that has no business with Sony.

Sony representatives contacted us today and reversed the decision. I can't say whether or not this board had any influence. We will show 4k footage (barring any surprises) and are ready to roll. We are proud of the footage, but keep in mind that we turned on the sensor, shot the footage and sent it through the chain. There was no characterization of the sensor or dead pixel correction. Greame wrote the demosaic program and I wrote the color profile. Even though we have many opportunities to tune up what we are doing, we make no excuses for what we will show. We are all amazed at what we have right out of the box. "Better to be lucky than good."

It's probably more a case of someone at Sony realizing what a good hook this would be (for ibc coverage) on the online blogs, magazines, and water cooler talk by the pros (maybe this site is a mini-example of that).

I don't quite know what goes into characterizing a sensor (except generally) , but I'm excited to see whatever you've got. Bring on the 4K baby.

MADE UP NEWSFLASH

Sony have today announced their intention to show footage from their new cinealta camera the NGC-23, affectionately known as Son of Genesis at IBC.

Inside word is that Sony plan to supply free wine and beer to everyone attending the screening, and in fact one rumour has it that people will be breathalized before entering the auditorium to make sure people are at the very least legally drunk. Apparently it is the hope of Sony executives that the more drunk the audience gets the better their footage will look.

I laughed so hard I cried a little. Thanks Mr.

Good to hear everything worked out. I think Sony really dosen't want RED footage shown on the sam projector at the same time as their new cam. And I think this was an attemped for this to happen. What I think they didn't count on was the news of this sperding to the internet and the backlash it caused.

But now all is good and RED will be given a fair chance. I think we should have armed gardes around any power cables and braker boxes that the projector is hooked to. Just in case

Yeah.

I think Sony *really* didn't want word of this to get out online.
I belive Sony did everything in their power to prevent the news from spreading from DVXuser.

Good thing it filtered on out from here to other sites (like DVi) quickly enough.

Finally, they read my post and thought "Heck, if our cameras cant compete, then atleast people sure will be buying alot more of our projectors!"

Seems more logical that way...

We have backup plans.

..so you still want the 20 ninjas waiting in the back hall then? hold on ..ill go tell them its a thumbs up.

..i dont know though. i cant see people buying 4k projectors just because they have a 5k camera. i could see renting one, or using one for screen tests at a paid facility, but buying one .. not unless they are already some multi-million dollar studio, at which point they would buy one no matter what brand of 4k cam they have. though perhaps the red sales will demand more projectors in projection houses do to more need for 4k digital projection tests..?
at any rate, Sony needs to take it like a man. nobody likes the spoiled kid who leaves the playground and takes his ball with him just because hes losing a fair and square game. if anything they should consider it a learning experience and soak in all they can, and then get on with trying to come up with something that could someday potentially give them some of the high end digital cinema camera market share back. all in all its just good to know that all is moving ahead, and a company like Sony ..albeit ill-mannered in my opinion, has some integrity left within the machine.

No, I dont think everyone with a 4k camera and his cat is going to buy a 4k projector. But there is no denying that as more and more people buy 4k cameras, the demand (overall) for 4k projectors will rise as well. If not camera owners, then rental facilities, and studios atleast will be buying more of these projectors.

Anyway you look at it, more 4k cameras= more 4k projectors.

Jim mentioned that maybe RED should build a 4k projector. That doesn't necessarily confirm that RED actually will do that, but if they did, I assume that it would be feature-laden and affordable, like the RED One camera system.

If we've learned one key thing since December, it should be this: Don't underestimate the capability and tenacity of RED.
