Sony Vs. Red? Sony's early response to Red?

All I know is I am sure the Red people will find a way to get their footage shown.. they're brilliant people and proactive... this hickup won't stop them, I am sure!

your so right Brandon.. i dont think this will stop them.. maybe from showing 4k at IBC but i have a feeling they will figure something out.. They still have a week ha ha ha.

This is exactly the kind of thing I was talking about in the other thread. Even if RED delivers, there will be an amazing amount of politics and "red" tape to overcome. Do you know the story of Preston Tucker?

Pretty much the same situation as Jim Jannard, right down to the presell... only, in 2006 and beyond you can actually directly market to people and get around the middle men...it wont be easy though.

Yes, the movie "Tucker: A Man and His Dream", by FF Coppola was great, IMO.
There are some distinct differences though; Tucker is a rather extreme example given he tried to revolutionize the way in which people went about their daily lives in their automobiles as a measure of safety and security. Jim; respectively, is revolutionizing the way in which artists/filmmakers make movies/art - a measure of communication, which is very important IMO, an essential part in the development of humanity, but in the immediate sense to most people it is not as critical as directly altering one's personal safety via new transportation.
All in all, Tucker got to make his car, and Jim will make his camera, damn it.

Why cow down to SONY? Why not have your own RED show? I have been talking withe several DP, gaffer types this week. Many are unaware of RED? They think I am smoking crack.....
Jim, think of hosting your own event with the media coverage....E-tonight,
Extra...Media celebs....

Sony are mean.

They attack RED, they attack this community. We have all been waiting for this event and Sony is dooing their damdest to snuff it out.

Those projectors are in short supply. They also require a 4K server. A digital projection system takes time to set up properly. Lens needs to match screen size, etc., etc. And RED needs an appropriate venue. I've seen a few disastrous screenings in my time where either the venue wasn't ready or the equipment wasn't properly set up. Better not to show than to show in less than (close to) optimum conditions. One cannot unring a bell. The buzz from a bad screening can last a long time.

Yes I am quite aware that Sony likes to play hardball. Sony completely trashed the 720p format and told everyone that 720p was not real high definition and you would get better picture quality with a good standard definition camcorder. So as a result all the 720p cameras got bad reviews but Panasonic outsmarted Sony by offering 720p, 1080i, and 1080p multiformat support for its HVX-200. I suspect Sony could criticize Red by claiming that its 3 chip 1080 high definition cameras offers better color reproduction than the single chip Red camera. Of course this will not be true because Red offers 4:4:4 color reproduction at 2k resolutions but that will not stop Red from getting a bad review from someone who does not know what he is talking about.

We have solved a lot harder problems than this one in the last 8 months...

Jim
And you'll be solving at lot more challenges in the next 8 months.

I hope it's a miscommunication and it'll get sorted.

One thing this has made me think about, is why are there so few 4K projectors ? Is it the SXD tech that Sony pioneered ? Or are the other makers waiting on the eventual digital conversion of the major theater chains ?Like you mentioned, as a proponent of getting digital technology and theaters equipped with it; the synergy with RED's footage should have been a home run.

Oh well, I'm not one to speculate. But, I would postpone it, if you have to compromise. First impressions and all. What's that Marine motto ? Adapt and Overcome ?
:)

What the ?

The only one in existence ? (Sonys 4K)

Jim

Might wanna consider making your own projector while youre at it

In the meantime....

How about getting some 4K frames up on your website. Perhaps in a section labelled, what the industry is terrified for you to see!

I hope it isn't so, and if it is, it could really damage Sony's image of a professional business with such a childish behaviour.

They did it for me with their crappy wet lube tapes (audio tape actually not DV tape) and when the lied about their 24p. I really have no respect for them outside of the fact they produce a gorgeous image, but so does Panasonic and Canon.

I think you will find Sony were going to be showing the NGC-23 (2/3" Son of Genesis) at IBC. Whether that included screening of footage I don't know.

What I do know is you don't want your 150k camera smoked by a 17k one courtesy of your own projector.

I guess the Hollywood screenings rattled some cages.
Here begins the FUD.
