Sony Vs. Red? Sony's early response to Red?

I just noticed that the post from "puredv" with the claim of the internal Sony memo has suddenly vanished from this thread!

genesis , arri , i think only out to 1920x1080 .. the dalsa camera does 4k out ... viper not sure ( has 2/3 " CCD's)

RED, Sony and IBC

RED, Sony and IBC

Here is the situation. We contracted with IBC to rent the theater for our 4k presentation and were told that Sony was donating the 4k projector (the only company that has one) for us to use. All was fine until two days ago. We were informed by IBC that we (RED) would not be allowed to show our footage on Sony's machine. Sony has known for several months that we were scheduled to present on their machine. Unfortunately, that doesn't give us much time to recover. But we are not giving up.

We have calls in to Sony to try to understand what happened and hope that this all is some kind of communication error. The IBC is also trying to get to the bottom of the situation. It is particularly difficult for us because we have worked so hard to get the footage ready for this event. We successfully previewed our footage on a Sony 4k projector in LA last week. We are ready. It is my humble opinion that our camera is a perfect match for Sony's projector. And a mutual presentation would be in the best interests of both companies and the future of the industry.

Let's not panic quite yet.

Genesis and Viper record out to HDCAM SR tape format - 1920x1080, 10 bit RGB 4:4:4. Or if not to SR tape, to an S.two recorder...or whatever...but at 1920x1080.

Good luck Jim & the crew.
Here's to hoping that it all works out

- Mikko ... considering a trip to IBC, partly for RED footy.

Yes it's a good idea, but it should be a last resort. If we do that, it will carry on all the defects of film, all the grain, scratches (etc.). Using the JVC projector is a good idea though too, but I don't think that can be negotiated in that short time :/.

you are right.. as the RED at 5k has more workable resolution than 35mm film.. but it is higher than the only other option, which would be 2k.

How about a combination of downscaled 2k and windowed 4k (to 2k)?

Sucks the big one in comparison I'm sure, well short of the full potential. But it still shows what the camera can do.

Heh, the 4 x 2k projector idea is a clever one if there's time to spit the footage. - And there are 4 2k projectors available at short notice.

If there's any truth about what's going on here, sounds like a classic David v. Goliath story. Good copy, if you get my drift.

Atten: Jim Jannard

I'm a visual fx artist working at Technicolor, Toronto. I could offer to output your piece to film on our 4K Arri Laser film recorder. We also own a lab and could turn a couple of work prints around in about 24 hrs (no optical track audio, unfortunately). I've already talked to my buddy who runs the digital film department, and he's game. Of course, you'd have to fly a big drive up to Toronto (along with some scary Red security). We could trade you for a red camera (um, or a lens? A pair of sunglasses? A tee-shirt?)

Kidding aside, this is a serious offer. Frankly if I was in your position I wouldn't want to screen a film print either, but it is a viable backup (assuming you can procure a 35mm projector at IBC.) And yes Techicolor is owned by Thomson, and yes they're competition too (Viper). But hey I just work here! (I knew I befriended those digital film guys for a reason.

I can be reached at 416-895-9515. Good luck.

I hate to play conspiracy theorist, here, but it sounds premediated... sadly. Waiting until a crucial moment to throw the switch sounds pretty cut-throat...

Good luck with the situation. I still want to see the Time Tank via download here on DVXuser.

This is exactly the kind of thing I was talking about in the other thread. Even if RED delivers, there will be an amazing amount of politics and "red" tape to overcome. Do you know the story of Preston Tucker?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preston_Tucker

Pretty much the same situation as Jim Jannard, right down to the presell... only, in 2006 and beyond you can actually directly market to people and get around the middle men...it wont be easy though.

ash =o)

This is a sad situation. However, it's also a win-win for RED.. Showing the footage or not. If they show it, then everyone will talk. If they are stopped then EVERYONE will talk. Jannard has the footage, he's shown it. People already know it's out there. Hundreds of people are waiting. Then, suddenly, Sony kills the event.

For RED, I tend to believe that a situation like this could be far more valuable than showing some footage in another country. This would cause a large underground media movement and people all over the net would never shut up about it (Proof: look at this thread).

The footage will show. I know Jim wants to show it. If Sony is smart they will back off this position quickly, otherwise they risk vaulting RED to a larger threat.

Perhaps this is just a simple misunderstanding.
I hope so. But if it's deliberate then it's a huge blunder on Sony's part.
It's not a business strategy or even "hard ball" but just an emotional, angry response that's short sighted and makes Sony look bad.

But it's no disaster for Red. If they don't get to show footage at IBC it will be shown elsewhere. It's a bump in the road. It would be nice for lots of people to get a chance to see footage at IBC, but it will do if a few well respected industry people get a chance to review the footage and write for the industry news outlets.

Show it at the DGA or ASC, Adam Wilt or others that frequently write for the trades.

Even if it's just 2K. 4K would be nice but 2K would still be a big deal.
Alot of industry insiders such as James Cameron have said that 2K is good enough for commercial theatrical distribution.
