P2 Card not mounting to Powerbook-- need help fast.

It's not a survey that'll get action, it's precise repeatable documentable procedures that the Apple & Panasonic engineers can then use to get to the bottom of the issue.

As a software developer (in a former life) I can say that if I couldn't repeat a bug, I couldn't fix it. If you provide enough feedback that the Apple guys and the Panasonic guys can repeat the issue, then they can fix it.

That's fine. What I'm saying is that I'm willing to help in any way that is helpful. If there's some way I can document the problem, I'd be happy to do it.

UGHHH!! I'm having the same Problem as doccutter..

I just got off a 12 day shoot in Tallahassee w/ the HVX200. I use my 15" 1.67 ghz PPC G4 Powerbook w/ 2 gigs ram to dump P2 cards to a 500gig G-Raid firewire drive using P2 Genie. I was locking up after every 4 cards or so for several minutes (not 15 seconds). It was increadibly frustrating to say the least. I have Many Apps on the system including FCP 5.1.1, Photoshop CS2, DVD Studio Pro 4.0.3, P2 Log, P2 Genie, Aperature, Toast Titanium, Skype, Firefox, Quicksilver, etc. etc. All apps are current versions.
I finally have a day off in NYC and follow Ander's instructions to create a log in the Terminal using "shark -i" and for the life of me I can't get the PB to lock up!! I have been mounting and dismounting P2 cards all day and the greatest delay I have experienced is 15 secs. The only difference in my configuration between Tallahasee and New York is I don't have the G-Raid drive up here, but a Lacie Porsche drive instead. I can't image the firewire drive is the culprit, but I am baffled..
I have 4 P2 cards, 2-4 gig cards serial #'s AD06A1950 and ADC06A0391, 2-8 gig cards serial #'s AAD06B0136 and AAD06A0484.
I will keep trying to recreate the Bug while running Ander's test of the Kernal extensions. I'm in NYC till 9/1. If anyone has any other ideas I would love to hear them.

I feel your pain. I have spent some hours trying to troubleshoot this problem (my 15 inch 1 GHZ PB works fine, my 17 inch 1.67 GHZ PB has similar problems as yours). Because of the randomness of the lockups, it makes for frustrating troubleshooting. I thought unplugging my FW drive was the answer and then ten dumps later it craps out on me...tried new user...fix permissions, update driver, etc....eventually it goes back to crashing on eject every so often. Anyway, good luck.

Hmm. Are your cards full of data when you're trying to reproduce the problem? Maybe that's a variable we can eliminate, just shoot random stuff at 1080, offload the cards until it locks up.

My set up was:
(4) 4 Gig cards...all full
(1) 15inch PB Titanium 1Ghz (1 GIG Ram)
(1) 17 inch PB Titanium 1.67 Ghz (1 GIG Ram)
Same OS..almost identical software...nothing unusual.

the 15 inch had no problem, the 17inch would vary from 20 successful downloads to maybe 1 or 2 before it crashed...
Crash would occur when, after dragging to trash or CMD-E the card, I would push the eject button to take out the card and the system would give a hard freeze.

Since there was no identifiable pattern, I basically figured the 17 inch PB had bad karma and gave up further testing.

This isn't directed at anyone in particular, but have you guys checked the firmware on your P2 cards to make sure it is current? Panasonic's firmware update utility only works on Windows, but if the cards weren't just recently manufactured, they may not have the latest firmware.

Here is a link to the updater and documents showing the latest firmware versions for the various capacity cards.

I listened all those problems but here, in Spain, nobody experiment any problem. So I had to try: I bought a second hand powerbook with 1'25Ghz. But before beging to work with it I tried it: I could download 8 P2 (4Gb) one day and 13 P2 the other with no problem. Then I began to try P2Genie (trial version) and no problem until I swich it to automatic mode. Then the same problems that all you: it was necesary to reboot the mac to detect the P2 Cards every one or two cards. Both days happened the same.
I don't say that P2genie is the problem at all but I spend that this can help to solve the problems... althought it sounds more and more ... like a poltergeist

Maybe Steve Jobs and Jan Crittenden must call an exorcist ;)

Well, I'd be very interested in knowing if anything with P2Genie (mac) is related to the problem. But from my extensive testing it happens with the same frequency with P2genie or sans P2Genie.
