Nikon, Canon vs. Cine glass.

I understand the concerns over using still lenses on the camera. The focus issue being the biggest conern, obviously. I started shopping around for a set of cine lenses and found an affordable set of Canon K35 lenses (14, 18, 24, 32, 50, 85) for 9,500. They're pretty damn fast (1.3-1.5) and they are in great condition. I too am willing to bet that the wide zoom will be somewhere in the 10K range.

It already seems as if the used cine lens market is responding, as the price for lenses and complete sets is steadily climbing upward, even changing in price by the week. It is a difficult proposition....to wait or sink some cash into glass now. I chose the latter. I do agree with Zane in terms of the versatility of a zoom lens (somewhere in the neighborhood of T2.8....please Jim?) and will be on board when it comes.....

Personally, I think that the third parties are going to have to pick up the slack in regards to matteboxes and follow focus systems. The timeline for this camera seems stacked to the gills already. I think all available resources should be concentrated on getting a fully functioning, bug-free camera out to us on the schedule release date.

Don't get me wrong. Even in cine-style shooting, if zooming is the best choice of expression for a shot, I zoom. In ENG-style shooting I invariable use zoom lenses, and I zoom much more than in cine-style, because those genres of shooting (sports, reality, etc.) simply call for more zooming.

I don't want to go off topic here, but just a small note for the Red team regarding a follow focus kit and the RedCage:

Your current renders look like the rails would stop at the camera body due to not having clearance through the hole to push them backwards. This could be a problem if you use a matte box/follow focus with a short prime and end up with long amounts of rail out in front of the lens. Usually rails are such that you can slide them backwards next to the camera body (or underneath) to prevent this.

You're probably already ahead of me on this but the renders don't show it?

acoreasc, I know the set of Canon K35 lenses you speak of (EDIT: actually turns out i don't). The speed sounds fantastic, but for that money, it's zoom or primes for me, not both (yet). I still side with the zoom for, well, ability to "zoom" and certain practicalities, but if the RED zoom comes in over $10K you may have to race me for that set.

Common sense should also tell us not to purchase lenses for a camera we have not even seen footage from nor have a confirmed final cost for.

Personally I like the ability to scale the lenses and resolution of Red to fit the size and budget of a given production. I may shoot a personal or indie project one week using 2K and Nikkors and the next week shoot a commercial or TV show using 1080P, Red glass and/or standard speed primes and the week after that shoot on a studio feature using 4K and Cooke S4s from a rental house.

As Jim said it is important to understand the advantages of lenses designed for cinema use but with patience and talent amazing images will be possible.

Haha. That's what my girlfriend says (time to get a new girlfriend :)). Although, it's confirmed $17.5K for the body.

Unlike Gibby, I'm not designing the camera for a wide range of productions (although the specs say it'll rock at that). Narrative features is my focus. For all other applications I'll rent (and the customer will pick up the tab). And if the RED zoom is under 8K, and glass is decent, then I think the weight and slower speed (2-3 stops slower than primes?), will be less a factor than the cost/reward ratio.

So, since I've asked everyone else, Jim, do you think it is more prudent to wait closer to shipping or even post shipping to purchase lenses, or not wait ? To wait or not to wait, that is the question.

Lol  Even if I wanted to forget (which I don't) she would remind me. She saw a list of lens prices I had on the desk, and was gobsmacked. I told her the first thing I'll film is her smile...

I guess that could be another thread - what's the first thing you'll shoot on RED ?

(In honor of her) Obrigado.
