DVCPRO HD & The End of My Sanity

"All you fools need to quit bitchin' and get a mac!"

Most sane statement all night that ive read.

I just cant imagine editing on a PC. Ive already converted whole companies to Mac's and the time saved in payroll and efficiency has already paid for itself 10 fold.

Look, this is hard for me to break down and say, and I'm probably a little overworked and over-tired, but grow up and learn something! I personally believe you're wrong about much of what you think you think. I'm 50 years old and edited on nearly every method of electronic device designed to do so, including the Droid (how many vets out there?) There is not now, nor ever been, nor will be the end all. You focus. Don't give up, learn the limits and push em' a bit and make it work for you. Any hour any day I can sit you behind a Nitrus HD/DS/Symphony, FCP Kona 3, Vegas, Media 100 and can in my heart tell you neither solves all your problems. I recently shot and now am editing a feature documentary with the camera I invested in (the HVX) and we are making ourselves feel moved by the imagery and sound. I'm truthfully not trying to be a jerk and only serve to inspire....we had V1.0 of the Firestore, first gen HVX and so on. By making good content, getting it distributed and forcing the manufacturers to pay attention to us will get you what you want. Until then, decide the least objectionable solution and attack it with fevor and passion, make it work for you because no one else will and teach somoeone else down the line. This forum got me near the end of this movie and maybe a little help from somewhere else, but there are a lot of Pelican cases in my office full of "New" gear soon to be out-dated...... and I'm still editing.

Best of Luck!

Hey Banana,

its definitly a pitty that they didnt put up the "broadcast"-trial of edius 4.
But if you can, try to get your hand on the old edius3 trial, there you can use p2 and you will see how sweet it works.

If you check the canopus.com frum, you can find a thread pointing on the .jp server of canopus, i think you can find the edius 3 trial there...try it!

EDIT: hmmm...i checked the server, but it doesnt look like its still on...maybe bhiga can help you...the server is: ftp://ftp.canopus.co.jp/pub/jp/drivers/winxp/

EDIT2: ok, im a nice guy: ftp://ftp.canopus.co.jp/pub/jp/drivers/win2k/
there is the trial of ediuspro3(which should have the broadcast features too), if it doesnt support p2(just from version 3.6 i guess), try to add the update from ftp://ftp.canopus.co.jp/pub/jp/drivers/winxp/
for edius3...good luck-and TRY it, otherwise i am pissed Banana..let us know what you think!

We had this before: Even when the P2 and so on functionality is included, you _need_ the dongle. Otherwise the features (P2, XDCAM, Varicam) are not unlocked.

Dude your getting a mac:). Go to the apple store and purchase a trial mac pro. The new mac mini will even edit dvcprohd. Honestly probably every mac user here started on the pc and switched to the dark side. Sell your rig. Buy a mac and edit happily ever after.

Sorry to disappoint you ... I just got a mail from Apple ... Final Cut Pro 5.2.1 does support .mxf native ... no need for use of Flip for Mac anymore ... same plug in as what Sony made for their XDCam HD and talking of price ... the new MacPro Dual Intel Xenon Core Dual 2.6 Ghz with same options as a Dell Inspiron is a 1000$ cheaper ... snap out of that myth that a Mac is more expensive ... check it out before you say that.

There is no perfect editor. period.
And I'm sure FCP unwrapping MXF to QT is still
faster than using raylight on PC.
Bottom line, I'm happy with FCP and made all my initial
investment back long ago.

I was talking about the edius3 trial, thats why i sent him to the japanese server to get it..i know that the 4 trial doesnt support any broadcast functions...-unfortunatly!:furious3:

Hmm Final Cut

Ive had allot of experience with it and DV editing, and I have come to despise it over time. Well, it not like i hate what it can do, it can do what all the rest can. Il put it this way, its like someone who every 5 minutes pinches you, over and over, 5 minutes later pinches you. Its a little thing but it will turn into hating that person.

Im a vegas chick, i use vegas in conjunction with Combustion and Connect HD. Works like a charm tbh. Why get a mac when you can do so much more with a PC.

Say hello to the Core 2 Extreme boys :D

Besides, behing a PAL owner of an HVX, mac has basicaly Sh*t all over me. No respect there.

I am not diasappointed at all, if this becomes reality and you will be able to edit .mxf native in fcp 5.2.1 without wrapping into qt, then this is great!

If it becomes reality, i might think about switching to mac too...but i will see..was there any specific release-date for the new fcp?
Would love to see it work!

Something for all the Mac lovers: Apple is always looking for the best, so they finally decided to use the fastest CPU available, the the ones from Intel. :) Right now, Intels running MacOs software have an advantage, as they can also run Windows, but the IBM compatible Intel PC can only run Windows.

Well, as I said before, everybody has to use what he feels right with.

I was talking about both versions, Broadcast v3 and v4. Even Barry could not solve this, as v3 also will not work for DVCProHD without the dongle. No dongle, no DVCProHD. The thread about it should be still somewhere in the archives.

What? There are people out there editing with pc's? :)
Just kidding.
What I like about FCP is that it's upscalable by (relatively) cheap hardware. SD to HD uncompressed. And that the studio-package kicks ass.
Anyway, since version 4.5 it's a reliable editor. And the fact that the software company makes the hardware aswell is a big plus as far as I'm concerned. PC's wide range of components are a blessing for your wallet and a curse for compatibility.
I've worked on high-end Avids on pc, low-end Avids on mac and fcp on mac. Guess what I have at home. :) Every system has it's glitches, but the mac just worked out better for me.

Greets,
Oliver

i have ten words to describe FCP that i will then convert to apple language.

*clears throat*

Rander, Render, render, render, render , render, render, render render, render... oops forgot to render, *horrid beep flies out of the headphones with a blue screen of mac death*

now in mac speak.

Apple+R, Apple R, Apple R, Apple R, Apple R, Apple+R, Apple R, Apple R, Apple R, Apple R

darn, now where did that mouse cursor change go to again, umm, move curson slightly above the clip, no too much, down , no to the right, yes, ooh missed it..

sorry had to get it off my chest :D

I'll be honest here... I never even owned a DV camera. The VERY FIRST camera I ever purchased was an HVX. The very first NLE I ever purchased was Final Cut Studio for my Intel iMac. You can't get any more "beginner" than that... yet, I've had no problems learning to use both. I've shot and edited a wedding and some vacation footage in my first couple weeks as practice. Of course, there is a ton to learn still... but at least of gotten over this "major hurdle" of DVC PRO compatibility. How? Maybe it is using a Mac product... maybe that made it easier for me? I don't know... but I do know that if I -- as a RANK BEGINNER -- can start shooting and editing with an HVX out-of-the-box in FCP, then a pro shouldn't have any problems!

One more thing, my primary computer before this Mac was a PC.

Also, the new Quad deskstops by Apple (announced yesterday) are great! Intel. $2,499... can't say the performance is crappy there!

Could you explain how Apple notified you of a update to FCS that is still in beta?

haha, ur first camera too. I was the same, im one of those annoying people who doesnt like starting with second best I guess, its risky, but not with film making. Always wanted to do it, but needed a digital option that would get me as close to pro as possible.

Id like to say that the HVX is so easy to pick up and use that anyone could do it and make something nice with I-Movie, but then I might loose money

;)

btw, im not anti mac. Im just jelouse ;). well not realy, would die for an alienware ALX. But the new Mac Pro looks pretty special if I could deul boot with windows and get amazing performance still.

If i was a newcomer, id get a mac. Only if ur NTSC tho :(

Digi Angel,
I have FCP for my personal setup with an AJA IO. At work I edit with Avid Meridian's and Adrenalin.

One of my biggest complaints, er, I mean "favorite features" of FCP is the vast array of options Apple has given you to wind up in the render zone.

This must have been a user feature request that they delivered on big time.
