Yes Red is Real. Images seen In all it's 4k Glory.

Its 2 completely different games.. I made fun of someone a couple months ago because they said they wanted to buy RED to take still images. I now take that back.

I was thinking the same thing..though of course I would love to enjoy the best of both worlds. I guess my previous RED topic thread doesn't seem too outlandish.

Also! they used an EOS lens on the RED? That is so friggin sweet. Can you autofocus? and what about the iris control issues the redrock has for eos lenses? I wonder how RED works with EOS lenses.

Great news, Jarred. What the heck do you watch the 4K footage on? Do they have a 4K projector there? I haven't heard of any computer monitors with that kind of resolution or did you watch it as 2K?

Mike's article said they were watching 1:1 footage on a 30" Apple monitor. Since the cinema display has a native resolution of 2560x1600 and the Red One 4K image is 4520 x 2540, that would mean they were seeing a crop of the image (albeit at full resolution) on the monitor. This assumes that what Mike wrote is accurate.

We had another good day yesterday. We still have a LOT of tasks in front of us. But designing and producing a world-class sensor is not one of them.

"on set" was a 4k monitor.. the 30" apple was in post, and you are correct... we had to scale down everything to watch it. Think about that for a second....

we had to SCALE DOWN footage to watch it on a 30" Monitor....

Yes, scaled down to the 30" is freaky indeed...and I am a definite res freak.

Exciting times!

Will Red be at DVExpo LA in November?

I doubt it, DVexpo is a pretty low end show based at the prosumer market.

Thats cool Jarred, getting exciting to see what the end product will be (in terms of image). Even though Im not buying one its good to watch the revolution take place.

Nice one Jarrad:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Well anyone thinking about the newly announced canons and thinking $4,000 as against $17,500 with the same likely footage as the XLH1.

THINK AGAIN ................................Red is in a diiferent league:)

All those smaller wee guys who thought (perhaps) i will just stick to my 3 CCDs, in any case it would cost too much when you add up several hugely expensive lenses etc...........THINK AGAIN.

????????? Dont get this statement at all. They are two different pricepoints altogether. Marketing to two different groups. If you want purely best image then maybe YOU SHOULD THINK AGAIN and go grab yourself a 35mm panavision and shoot on film. (sounds silly doesnt it? but thats like what your saying).

And if your thinking after buying red that primes are all you need to shoot a production. What about stabilisation, mattebox, filters etc.

Its ok I will still fantasise about red, and get my new cam and spend the money I dont need to on upgrading everything else, on my production.

yes indeed.. Jim has allowed us all inside the development stage.. If Red followed the book we wouldnt have seen or heard anything between the announcement at NAB and the footage at IBC. Instead we get to all see the progress, give feedback to what they are thinking, and in the end, end up with a camera that 1000's of people have gave input and "help build" rather than 5 engineers in a lab.

Well, if I can sell my first house back in California this weekend then I can have enough money to confidently put down that $1,000 reservation, but until then I'll have to wait.

Still, it's incredibly exciting news to hear that the sensor is basically done and I can't wait to see the results for myself. :)

That's one hell of a production monitor! Can you calibrate it accurately?
what kind of connection do you use for that res? Dual link HDMI?

Thats kinda a good point Jack.. the sensor isnt even tweaked yet.. we were initially looking at footage right off the sensor, raw and untouched. That is what makes it so exciting.. that at Zero it looks so good.. It means its just gonna get better.

Speaking of which.. You should see Jim hit the curves in Photoshop.. if he ever quits his day job he definitely has a fallback.

Jarred, you and Mike are the envy of many men right now, including myself.

Jim, you are going to become an icon in the digital film making world, and I'm extremely proud to take part in this revolution!

I just......I.....I love you guys!

Your right they are two different price points. But they are not as far apart money wise once you weigh everything up. Emanuel mentioned some 8,000 posts about the new canons whilst the Red forum in contrast was very quiet!! Mmm are they so far apart price wise that no one was considering buying one of the new canons instead of Red. I have a project to do which is likely to take a couple of years. Afterwhich if i fail i will sell the Red one or if i succeed, do some other projects. When i looked at the time, cost and all related costs i found many things are fixed irrespective what camera you are using. If you already have a 3ccd camera fully kitted out then it is a different matter, but if you don't have any equipment (and i don't ) then the actual price difference is not that great, in particular the likely resale value of Red and minimum kitting out is likely to be well sought after items that will keep its value high. Being modular and well advanced of most peoples needs helps Red in that respect.

I remember when the XL2 came out it was well over £5,000 to buy in the UK. Now it is considerably cheaper and for those interested in newer technology like HD it is obsolete for that purpose. I dont believe that will happen to Red its price will at least hold steady or might even rise!!!

I also want the WOW factor that i believe Red will deliver. My own almost impossible task is to learn the theory (which is doable i think) and the practical side which given my time scale of 1 year to learn is probaly not. But i have other ideas that might solve that for me (like someone else with experience to help or do it whilst i watch). Are there people out there who can't afford to buy a Red camera but would love the chance to learn to use it and gain valuable experience with it. I could offer that chance to a young but talented person who has more experience than me (thats probably most folk) and i could learn in the process. What a CV to give to a future employer, oh and i have spent two years doing a video using the Red camera here it is......

I know form reading many of your posts you are a great guy and you give really good advice. Red is for many people in different situations. From what i have read here and elsewhere getting a camera is only part of the equation. Kitting it all out can cost a considerable amount of money. Many people regard certain cameras as having a life span of three years and they are replaced for various reasons. All that learning on one camera to be replaced in three years! With Red they are talking of ten years!!!

Time is money, learning costs money, experience is priceless........
It does not matter what camera you buy the learning still takes time and costs money and when you replace that camera you have to learn again with another camera!!

I almost bought the canon XL H1 AT $9,000. plus i required a wide angle lens. plus all the other stuff. The price difference of $8,500 is not that much as a pecentage of the total cost of everything to complete my project. How much will the canon XLH1 be worth in two years time?

How much will the Red be worth in two years time? I believe Red offers more pluses and less of a loss if you were to sell. The same applies to some of the 2/3rds cameras versus Red. Its just a beginners take on things ncje. Maybe i am just talking rubbish i don't know? But I could buy the cheapest still lens for buttons, stick it on the Red one and would the Red One produce a better 1080p picture from it than say whatever the XLH1 can produce out of the camera?. You guys are incredibly skillful at doing what you do but for anyone new to all this, Red offers a VALUABLE AND POTENTIAL LUCRATIVE AND LONG LASTING learning curve path at a price point that puts everything else in the shade. If i was starting out on this as a career right now i would beg borrow and do whatever i could to get a Red camera. If i have this wrong then anyone can feel free to comment afterall i am just a beginner but i feel there are others out there who might not have looked at things that way and go for the cheap canons and short term view instead of pushing and stretching yourself to the limits and getting something far more valuable. Like buying a house except that one is likely to last three years the other at least ten!!! I know what house i would buy....A RED ONE:)

Sorry for the long post:( Michael

And to add a touch of perspective to this, normally you never see raw sensor data, even when you use a "raw" file - that's because there's pixel and sensor correction that's usually done before you get to see it. To see actual raw raw raw sensor images and have them look good is actually much better than it sounds!!
