No P2 format in the new HDX900?

Well the obvious one is that you're not getting all the frame rates in between so it's not "variable frame" rate but "multiple" I also noticed that the AJ-HDX900 has a 14bit A/D converter whilst the Varicam a 12bit one. But there are others too like sensitivity etc.

Variable frame rates, primarily.

The HDX900 does 24p/25p/30p/50i/60i, like the CineAlta, but does it in 1080 and in 720.

The VariCam is 720-only but provides full variable frame rate capability and the FILM REC gamma modes.

Anybody know if the camera is shipping yet, or ETA on the street?

Looks like a direct competitor to the F330. Pixel count is superior with Sony but 35Mbit at top end is crazy. 2/3" progressive CCD from Panny also helps.

If you have to work with the footage, P2 slays, but if you're not working with the footage and just handing it off, then you let the tape become someone else's headache.
Yes, but the other advantage (of P2 AND tape) would be that you create your own backup as you go along, so you loose the hassle of having to actively archive, whilst keeping the advantages of solid state. There may also be times when downloading is not immediately feasible in the field - with a hybrid camera just carry on filming on tape only.

Considering the price of DVCPro HD decks a P2 version of this camera could come down signifantly in price and be a very interesting solution, and I think you just DV and tape altogether for that version as you can get this version with tape.

Spatial offset is not mentioned in any of the press material.
Could be a plain interpolation.
As 1080p is 1280 wide it would be in the vertical axis only...

I for one think this is a great decision for Panny. I've been working with the HVX for 3+ months now, and the workflow in Avid is not quite there (see Avid posts for more detail)...I have lamented shooting content on the HVX because it isn't tape. I have to back up and offload to a laptop, take to the desktop of my PC and then you know the workflow for Avid. Definitely still a ways to go.

Sorrry but I don't really see what the problem with Avid is or why you have issues with the workflow. Offloading to a laptap is yes time contraining but backing up the files and placing them on your desktop is still a hell of a lot faster than it takes to capture the tape. I'm also curious what these Avid problems are. You put the MXFs in your Avid Media Files folder and find them with the media tool. It's much faster and easier than capturing. Avid can even read the footage strait off the P2s and let you edit from them (as I've done in the past). What are these problems for P2 support? The Avid DV100 codec isn't very colloperative with other programs I'll grant you but this would be the same issue with DVCProHD tapes as well.

side note to HDX900 and DVCProHD in general:

Does a HVX PAL and NTSC cam in 1080 DVCProHD recording to P2, have different underlaying pixels, ie, one has 1440 x 1080 and the other has 1280 x 1080, respectively?

Thanks in advance.

That's true for DVCProHD in 60Hz countries, but the spec is 1440 horizontally for 50Hz variants.
Hey, but there are no HDX900 variants. This is supposed to be a world camera. So what happens if you choose to shoot in 25p or 50i? Does it 1440 pixels horizontally? And then would´nt it be strange that the same camera only resolves 1280 when recording at 24p?

And an other question: Barry Green wrote that you can use the tapedrive of the HDX900 in stead of an external recorder. But would´nt that be kind of abusing the cam? How long would the tapedrive stand a daily workflow of that kind?

Now i am thinking that Panasonic should have skipped P2 and came out with a internal hardrive setup for the HVX. No P2 but straight to Hardrive. Laptop hardrives are very small and could have fit in the camera adding very little size and they consume little power. 2 40gb drives inside the camera that can be mirrored for safety or raided for storage. That would have rocked the industry. I think that people like the tapeless workflow and not necessarily the P2 workflow. You still have all the benefits without the negatives.
HDX900 with built in hardrive and tape drive would have been perfect.

I think part of the reason the price is still high is that the HVX200 is the only camera that uses the things.

Wasn't there an SDX900 varient that used P2 cards? SPX900? something like that...

Interestin idea though they'd have to be removible since I don't think many of us would appreciate it if the hard drives crashed and suddenly our cameras were a $6000 paperwieght.
