ATTN: Bad OSX Finder Bug when using P2 Store with P2 Card Inserted

I'm burning my most recent footage to DVD's and just ran across an annoying and dangerous bug in Finder. It only occurs when your are using a P2 store with a p2 card inserted in the slot.

I am running OSX 10.4.7 on a Dual 2.3 G5.

When I drag files from the p2 store to a dvd-r in finder, the OS will only copy the footage from the P2 card, regardless of which partition I drag the data from.

The OS sees the P2 card as NO NAME 0 in the Disk Utility, where the P2 Partitions are NO NAME 1 through 15. It's as if Finder ignores 1-15 and just uses the data from 0 regardless of the actual source.

Here's how I have repeated the problem.

Click here for Screen Capture of the Problem

Mount P2 store with 15 full partitions and a full card in the slot.

Mount a blank DVD and choose to open it in finder.

Drag files from on of the P2 store partitions, NOT THE P2CARD into the DVD finder window.

Double click on the LastClip.txt file in the DVD finder window, it will show the information from the lastclip.txt file on the P2 Card, not the file that I just dragged over.

Double click on the Contents File, and the Clip file to find the clips from the P2 Card, not the file I just dragged over.

Burn the disk.

It contains the information from the P2 Card, not the files I dragged over.

This would have resulted in lost data, had I not been printing thumbnail sheets from the DVD after burning and noticed that the footage burned was from the wrong project.

Can anyone else with a p2 store and a mac confirm this bug?

thanks and be carefull,

It gets interesting...

The p2 card doesn't seem to matter. Now it just copies the lowest drive partition ( NO NAME 1 ) if the P2 Card isn't inserted.

So no matter what I do, finder only copies the contents of NO NAME 1.

I just ran the latest updates from Mac, but don't recall if there was an update to finder.

I've burned like this for the past 8 months without a problem.

Next I will see if Toast has better luck, but as it stands, I am unable to burn DVD's from finder. I've tried 2 different P2 stores and they both behave the same.

I did notice that when I Got Info on the P2 partitions, they had thier modified dates set back to 1979. I flashed PRam and now see the correct modified date but the problem persists.

Thanks Anders,

I'll give it a try. BTW, I've been using Genie for a while now and love it.

Anders,

Tried the App, ( pretty cool ) and dragged No Name 11 over the the DVD, I get the contents of No Name 0. Funny enough, if I drag the contents of another partition, they both show the same wrong info.

Any ideas on how to unconfuse Finder?

Back in the day I would have rebuilt the desktop...

So I can use toast to get around the problem, but so far, Finder is totally buggered when it comes to reading from my p2 stores.

Even just trying to open the lastclip.txt file from finder isn't working. If I open a partition, I can see the preview of the Lastclip.txt file, but if I double click on it, Finder opens the LastClip.txt from the NO NAME 0 partition.

Here are the steps I've taken so far, none of which have helped...

Log in as alternate user
Create New user, log in under that user
Reset PRam
Verify Permissions on System Disk
Drag /User/Library/Caches to Desktop and Reboot
Drag /User/Library/Preferences to Desktop and Reboot
Boot in Safe Mode

So far the only things that allow a workaround is to copy to the desktop first, then burn from the new file not origionating from a No Name location.

Or right clicking on the file in the DVD finder window and "Choose New Origional" to reconnect the alias to the correct file.

I did not have to go through any of this yesterday. The only change to the system is the installation of the latest updates from Apple and Adobe.

Any ideas would certainly be welcome... otherwise I'll start looking at reinstalling the OS :crybaby:

I posted a screen capture of the problem on You Tube,

You can view it here...

Notice that the file contents of the Lastclip.txt file are different in the preview than in the opened file and ultimately different than what is copied to the DVD. The preview is the correct information, every thing else is erroniously showing the NO NAME 0 partition. Wierd.

Ok, problem with the video you posted. Never trust the Preview of any text file in the Finder. When you open the DVD in that video clip, you never actually open the LastClip.TXT file to see what is actually written inside it. The Preivew image tells us absolutly nothing.

Redo your clip, open the LASTCLIP.TXT file from both locations side by side to verify they are in fact different. Again, the Finder's Preview of any text file should never even be looked at, it's not all that acurate, and is not ment to be. It's just a garbage icon that may or may not be correct with text files.

Thanks Ben, I can confirm that the preview is actually showing what's going on, it's more than just the lastclip, the entire contents of the partition is incorrect. I've posted a new video here that shows the entire card is misdirected. I won't show it in the screen capture for time reasons but the files are incorrect on the DVD after burning as well.

This one really has me stumped.

I'm to the point where reinstalling the OS seems like my only recourse. I am fairly convinced it was caused by the PowerPC Mac OSX update 10.4.7 that was performed earlier in the day when this started. Is anyone else using a G5 with P2Store on this update? Are you experiencing the same?

Too many people use that old Windows fix of reinstalling the OS. Waste of time if you ask me. Run Disk Utility, then Disk Warrior. I can assure you that other than those two proceedures, reinstalling OS X isn't going to fix that problem. But that's just my humble opinion base on many, many years in a previous profession.

Have you tried copying the files to your hard drive first? Then burn to DVD? They copy very fast. I'd try that first.

I'm hoping to roll back to the 10.4.6 update since it seems 10.4.7 is the culpret. Copying to another drive first does work, but I preffer burning directly from the P2 store for redundancy purposes. My workflow involves copying from the P2 store to a raw hard drive and dvd for backup. I copy from the P2 store directly for each so that if there is a problem in the copy, the 2nd backup will most likely be ok. I already had an entire 15 card copy go bad for an undetermined reason and only the independant DVD backup saved the footage. It was discussed here...

I have found that toast can work as well, but I would rather the system function as it did just a few short days ago!

Thanks for helping out, do you have any ideas other than a reinstall of rolling back to a previous software update?
