P2 Card not mounting to Powerbook-- need help fast.

Could this be a OS 10.4.7 issue? We've been noticing some other problems with this build... I ran a G4 PB at NAB for 4 days, constantly sticking P2 cards in and out without a reboot.

Actually, it's happened less since I went to 10.4.7. It still happens though.
Usually not more than 5 cards before it locks up. The P2 icon will show up in the menu bar but the card itself won't mount on the desktop. Taking the card out and inserting it again usually will do the same thing and eventually lock the computer up which then requires a restart.

I'm running 10.4.6 and have been getting the lack of card recognition every 2 or 3 card loads. Same as described, icon in the tool bar, no icon on the desktop. I've tried re-inserting the card several times but I didn't experience the lock up. I simply rebooted in order to keep the workflow going. I'll test against this build before updating to 10.4.7, now that I have the new driver installed.

I haven't used P2 Genie ever, and the P2 card not being recognized happens to me often enough to be annoying. Fortunately, my g4 laptop has a fast boot up time.

Indy....

I was fine for a long time and then it started doing it every time. I just repaired permissions, but I'm not sure that will do anything. I'll download the driver and try to install that again.

Does upgrading the P2 card's firmware help?

can someone please explain instructions on how to offload the P2 card to the laptop. I am using a Mac G4 powerbook. 10.3.9
I installed the software from the CD I received with the camera. It says the install was successful- but i can not seem to find it my finder or application folder.

I tried sliding the P2 card into the card slot on the powerbook and I do not get an icon. I re-boot. Still nothing.

Do I need to capture through Avid or FCP?

(I want to offload the P2 footage to my external HD which is hooked up to powerbook via FW400)

The manual does not really explain how to do this.

Thanks

Just out of curiosity because I haven't heard it mentioned. I noticed that when you eject the p2 card (right click and click eject, not physicaly eject) on a powerbook the pc slot icon is still active at the top of my desktop. If you click on the icon it asks if you want to power down. I power the slot down and insert another P2. Have done this a dozen times in a row never had to restart. 2 steps to eject the card.

After it started freezing the computer, clicking eject and then popping the card out, we tried to shut down with that icon as well, but clicking that button would freeze up the computer.

Although, after I repaired permissions the problems went away so far. We might have to do that a few times a day, maybe after 5 cards or so.

I've taken to always dismounting the card AND power down the icon. I used to have lock-ups and started doing it this way. Just did 12 4Gig offloads this AM and no problems

Tak just for clarification the mode I'm using is click eject, power down the slot, then I pull the card. If you're doing it this way and it still freezes I would give it a couple more seconds before powering down the slot. Maybe its taking a bit longer to eject the card and by clicking power down too quickly it causes a command conflict leading to a freeze. I've noticed that certain firewire drives from different vendors that i have all unmount or mount differently. Some take longer to mount and unmount than others. Also getting a copy of Disk Warrior can help find reasons that may be causing this.

I wonder if this is the cure for the lockups if Anders can make P2 Genie power down the card as well. That would be sweet. :)

If this indeed cures the problem and there is an easy interface to programmatically power down the cards, ill be glad to include this in the eject routine

Power off card still does not solve this problem.
I rebooted the PowerBook transferred 3 4gig P2 cards ejecting each only after powering off the card and letting it sit for a while. On the 4th card, the icon shows up in the menu bar but the card does not mount.
So, there's still something else that's causing the issues.
Hopefully Apple will come up with a fix soon.

I note the same thing as n8ture. On the third P2 card load on a shoot this weekend, same thing as before - no recognition of the 4th card although I get the icon in the toolbar. Still running 10.4.6.

So using a 17" PB I had nearly a dozen consecutive loads of the P2 card without a problem. They were recognized every time. Beyond that, the only other difference is that I was not using P2 Genie (it wasn't loaded on the machine).

Is anyone having this problem with the 17" or is it just the 15"?

Nope, mine's the 17" that I have problems with.
It happened before I had P2 Genie so that's not the cause at all.

I'm in the market for a laptop to work with the HVX and most advice on this site suggests apple as the best brand option. However, given the subject of this particular thread, should I look to PC or will this p2 load problem with apple be resolved? I don't want to have to reboot my computer every other occasion that I unload my p2 card.
