Andromeda Clip from my Feature

how is the andromeda better than the HVX? what i'm getting from all this is that panasonic lied about the line/pixel count of the CCDs...how are you getting 1080 off a 720 chip? i'm not doubting that 4:4:4 uncompressed video, but this whole resizing thing is coming from the sculptorHD...that i understand and have no problem with, but to make the andromeda sound like it alone is doing the conversion...

Actually pixelshifting with 3ccds are not all that different from how a CMOS sensor work. And nobody complains on the Canon EOS 350D.

HVX does pixel shift too.

However, Sculptor HD can be and is updated. HVX users are stuck with the pixel shift algorithm that comes from Panny. Juan at reel-stream is always improving the current algorithm and will probably add new ones as well, which could be used to get better results depending on what you filmed.

Not to mention andromeda has more latitude than the HVX and is fully uncompressed. These are reasons I bought it, not to mention that since I'm already doing the job of 4 people, I don't have time to offload p2 cards. Not that I could afford them either.

I'm with you on that. I'm almost finshed shooting a feat right now, and we've had to work so fast that any offloading or copying files would cut the day in half. I know you could just hire someone to do it, but on a super-micro budget level, how do you afford it? I spent my precious crew money on the capture department. (I have andro too, sorry for not saying that sooner) Also, once you get used to having uncompressed HD for less than a dollar a Gig, it would be difficult to go to having compressed HD for a little less than a hundred a Gig...

Re: The footage: my computer (mac) hates playing these big WMV files.. aren't you a mac guy virium?? How do you run sculptor? Why not h264, man??

I have an iMac for capturing, but i haven't picked up Final Cut Pro yet (budget reasons). I'd love to. Maybe next paycheck.

iMovie is awful, so I throw it onto my windows machine when I do footage tests and then edit it in Vegas which always crashes when I try to render out h264. :(

When I'm ready for real post production work, I'll pick up Shake, FCP, and a faster mac probably; not sure if the iMac could handle it all that well.

Camera looks great.Colours and filmic look.

Thought the acting was suspect though even in this short clip. And whats this fascination with guns?

Matt: I got a few pics but nothing with everything all together, and they show me using the m2 which I stopped using after the second shoot because 4000 watts of light still wasn't enough, and I couldn't get good lighting setups just because I needed that much ambient light and I was running out of spots to put them... I'll try to get a better setup picture tomorrow.

noonansboy: Thanks, glad you think the footage looks good.

Not sure why you say the acting is "suspect," seeing as there is no dialogue, they are drunk as hell, and you have only seen two guys faces for barely 10 seconds.

Fascination with guns? Well, besides the fact that I love guns, you can't really expect 1930s gangsters to go around whacking people with lollipops and umbrellas.

I know there is no dialogue and u see them only briefly but I cant help feel that the guy on the right of the panning shot is unbeliveable in his portrayal of a drunk.I feel that it is this that instantly detracts from the fact that it looks amazing.

And the thing about the guns is that so many posts of work on this forum seem to have guns involved.Whether it be a Ghetto thing or a gangster thing. They seem to be very popular.I just feel there are maybe more ways of telling a story than using guns in this stereotypical fashion. But then that is just me.

Would definately like to see the end product though m8.

You didn't spend the money, I did.

I think we've discussed this enough. I'm happy with my choice, it's no skin off your back what I've spent my money on. You don't think it's worth it, that's cool. I did though, and I'm happy with the decision I made.

And I don't like the JVC. I don't care what's been shot on it. I hate working with tape.

(What happened to the tool doesn't matter, it's the artist?)

Sorry for keeping this going, I'm don't really care about p2, tapes or whatever technical recording differences people have talked about. What I am curious about though, is how you came to the decision about the vari-cam option of HVX (being able to shoot slow-mo basically) compared to the increased latitude of what you have? Was it simply the decision that you don't use slow-motion very much, or was any of that even a consideration?

slow ur role V before bust a casket its my opion and from what i belive it open discussion you choice ur choice and I aint mad ya, im saying what the Dog would do with his 3,000 not yours , some may agree with you some may not open disscussion , as long ur happy its all good baby baby to paraprase Biggie Smalls

I don't think he opened a thread to discuss what you would do with your money, or why he chose to go Andromeda in the first place. He's out doing something with his money...

He opened it to show what he's been working on.

To Virum: If you haven't already given the rundown, what's the story about?

Hey Gohanto,

I don't mind your question at all; I just don't like rehashing stuff into what amounts to a pissing contest.

Slow motion is cool, and it did factor in my decision. Let's start at the beginning:

When I purchased my DVX I wasn't sure if I should wait for the HVX, but I decided to get the DVX because there would always be something better on the horizon and I wanted to start shooting.

I shot my first short (see sig), a spec commercial, etc. all the while rolling towards making the movie this footage was shot for....a project I've been working on for three years with a friend. The HVX was out by now, and I was hearing a lot of split opinions about it. Lot's of comments on unnacceptable grain which other people didn't see. And then the fact that several editors didn't support the format captured, and I seem to remember reading something about how a mac or one of the pcs couldn't read from the p2 card directly and you needed a really expensive card reader.

And then that brings us to the cards. HVX by itself is $6K or was at the time, and then there was the $10k package with two cards. Solid state was really appealing. $10,000 wasn't.

I'd been keeping an eye on the andromeda footage for quite some time because it looked really cool and very filmic. It was opened to the public shortly around the time I got my DVX, and I had figured that if the HVX wasn't what it was cracked up to be I'd get it.

Like I said, I heard lots of split opininions on the HVX. I looked at the footage, it looked great, but I kept being drawn back to the andromeda stuff. The only thing andromeda didn't have was slow motion, although Juan said that he thought he could get 30p working with the new intel macs. That would be awesome, and 30p is enough slo mo for me. I won't have big explosions in my production, and if I do really need slo mo, I'll just rent an HVX for a day. Plus, slo mo is so overused.

And then there was the fact I could get a student discount on andromeda, but that wouldn't have changed my decision....but it was a nice bonus.

Also, like I said, offloading the p2 stuff would be too time consuming for me. All the actors in my movie are friends, and they don't have a lot of time. I'm not gonna waste their time offloading footage.

I also like the fact I can have up to three monitors. The iMac, the LCD on the camera, and my component outputs (RCA? I can't remember). It's so much easier to explain the framing when I can hand an outside monitor to the actors, or be able to watch my massive iMac screen from across the room.

I love it. Sure, I'm tethered to the computer, but it's a non-issue for me.

All in all though, it comes down to the fact that I really do prefer the workflow and image of andromeda.

I hope that covers everything. :)

as i stated before i liked what he did and I actually have seen V prior stuff and Il iked that too , all i did was stated an opion this america ur intitled to ur opion else ship out, and any artist in this biz need to get use to opions cause some will hate ur movie some will like ur movie and if you get all stressed about it ur not gonna make it, if u cant handle opions then i would suggest every one and any one even thinking of making any film to not show it to any one keep in there DVD player and watch it alone else some one my see it and make an opion you may or may not like.

I'm afraid you'll have to wait for the trailer. :) My partner might kill me if I were to disclose such sensitive information. ;)

It's a 1930s gangster movie is all I can really say. :)

Your arguement isn't valid. You had an opinion on what he chose to do with his money, not the quality of his work.

If you're going to play the opinion card, make sure you play it right.

Virum--

I'm sure you'll start a new thread when the trailer is up, yes?
