Can I easily mix HVX and Varicam footage

I am doing a shoot with a Varicam and the HVX. Can I mix the HVX's 720pn with the 24fps with the Varicam at 720/60 24fps?

I think it is a yest, but is there a workflow issue? Or do FinalCut and Avid just know what to do with both formats in a 24fps timeline?

Thanks,

Rob

I would suggest shooting 720 24p over 60i in HVX to cut with the Varry.
I'm not sure how native 24pn and 24p over 60i would work on a single timeline.

Anyone test this out?

24p over 720i60 doesnt exist, its 720p60.

When editing 24 fps recorded into a 720p60 stream, you will allway's want to eliminate the redundant frames before you start and then edit into a real 24 fps timeline.

24 fps recording in 720/24pn and 720/60p, uses the same 720p60 codec, so after you have eliminated the redundant frames in the Varicam material thy are equal.

the question is can he mix varry footage with HVX 24pn on a single timeline.

Would he have to conform in cinema tools before cutting together? Would a single sequence handle 24 over 60 with native 24??

When importing 720/24PN varispeed material, FCP will conform your shots automatically to 24p.

When loading 24P material from the Varicam, you can instruct FCP to automatically strip the duplicate frames when digitizing, or use the menu command "Remove advanced pulldown" menu option.
If you use other speeds you can use the framerate converter tool to conform to 24P.

You will in all cases end up with the same 24p clips.

24pn material from the HVX and stripped 24p from the varicam is exactly the same inside FCP.
You should edit both in an 720p24 sequence.

Currently working on a production that is mixing 4 cameras (2 Pansonics and 2 Sonys) and are potentially about to add a 5th. Its all going to be edited on the same time line. As long as you bring it all in using the same codec you'll be fine (so just like was mentioned, once everything is processed to 24P and you edit in 24P your post universe will be happy).

Thanks guys,

I have been away at the shoot and followed my gut and shot 24pn. In the far back of my head I figured that it would resolve itself after import.

The shoot was pretty cool. We had Super 8, 16mm, 35mm, varicams, and HVX's on the same shoot. Every shooter had a zone to work on so no one was tripping over one another. Very cool.

Now all we have to do is wait for that old fashioned film to be processed, telecined, digitized, and the Varicam stuff to be engested too before starting. The HVX stuff is the only thing ready for the producer/director to look at.

It was pretty cool to be having dinner with him after everyone else left the set to get their stuff processed and review HVX stuff on the spot. I was able to show him all the variable frame rate stuff and he was blown away.

I could just see the wheels turning in his head as he was pondering if he should have done the whole thing with multiple HVXs.

Fun!

Again thanks,

Rob
