32 gig P2s not far off

Not that simple... P2 uses very high-end super fast SD cards. A 32GB would be 4 raided superfast 8gb cards. Those should be around soon enough but wont be cheap. The high speed 2GB cards are still currently over $150. 4 of those plus the intelligent RAID design make up an 8gb P2 card. Using that logic, a 32GB P2 card would cost upwards of $4000 right now.

I dont think they will release ANY new P2 cards until they can get the price lower. I suspect the 16GB card to debut at $1499 with the 8gb and 4gb both dropping in price. I could be wrong but it seems quite silly to release a card that is $2k to $4k

I agree with Ash on this one. I'm just looking for the 8GB cards to drop sometime soon. I'm holding off right now and may have to buy another 4GB card in the meantime.

16s pretty soon, I'd be very surprised if it wasn't before the end of the year.

Panasonic has every TV station that bought in quantity breathing down its neck to get them out ASAP, because 16GB is the real threshold for usability. Whee, 8GB = cheap = film load.

Fun.

I still think the move will eventually be towrd uncompressed for acquisition. Lets face it... the ONLY reason we are talking about more compression is the cost versus storage. When storage gets cheaper and mre robust, compression in the pro world will be for delivery only.

Actually Ash the P2 card price is directly tied the the availability of the SD card we are using. Right now the 2GB SD card we use is still in limited supply. I was hoping for the next price decrease soon but it may not happen for a while yet. As far as pricing on the 16 GB card, I expect that it will debut at about the same price of the 8 GB card and the 4GB card whch was around $2000.

Best,

Jan

I may just hold up on buying 16 gigs and purchase a few more 8 Gigs.

Jan: Have you thought about putting X-Men pictures on the P2s so we can start collecting them? If you made them into trading cards they would hold their value, especially if you print rare, limited-edition characters on the smaller cards.

Can't you just see the dealers at Comicon trading two 8Gig Pokeymons for one limited-edition-4-Gig-Wolverine? :)

Finally, a valuable post on this forum.

LOL

FYI, SD card are not fast. It the reason they need 4 card in raid to get the needed speed.

2.5inch laptop HD can do it, and if they made memory to replace those disk, it wouldn't be hard today to get those speeds from a flash card.

The only problem I see is the P2 card have been designed, built and tested to work with SD card only. The idea was that using a popular Flash Media would reduice the cost in the long run. But the problem is SD card size didnt increase that much. And price didnt lower either for the 'high speed' card.

So it come down to not beable to see low cost P2 card in the near future :(

if im not mistaken, didnt panasonic claim that larger p2 cards would come out every six months and the others would drop in price at the same rate?

The cam dropped in Dec. Its July. thats already over half a year and no official word on a release of a 16. Im no hater. I own and love my HVX. But where is it? If the technology isnt ready, at least drop the price for us(more than $50). follow through on half the promise. Can we get an official announcement on the status? in testing? dont have the parts? dont have the technology?

But to play devils advocate to myself, I was following the release of this camera from the first announcement. maybe the "every six months" was stated by fellow users.

Any thoughts?

Well, I think that panasonic is trying the best. The rate at which the prices of P2 is dropping is very promising and shows concern from Panasonic. :)

Recently A company in japan has created a 64GB Single Flash Modual, meaning it could go into any type of Device (p2's, SD cards, Cellphones)
So it isnt Far off.

Are they trying their best? why do you give them the benefit of the doubt (out of Curiosity)? If they made statements about an advancement every 6 months and we are still speculating, saying to ourselves that the technology is their and finding examples of companies that have made the Secure Digital cards large enough. In all reality, if they werent testing a 16gb when the camera first came out, then they are a we have a long way to go.

Remember when the camera came out they announced sept/oct, then nov/dec. it came out december 30th. I find it curious that they havent announced any release dates yet. If anything, push back the date but at this point i doubt whether its close to being complete.

and i dont think their price drops have been that great.

Brace yourself for a long wait. That or start asking Panny to give us a date and put a little pressure on them. Ive said before, I love the camera so dont think im a hater but a little criticism is good sometimes. We are loyal paying customers and they should be working for us. Then we will continue investing into their company.

I have to agree with ggdelarge. I love my HVX200 but really haven't found an HD recording medium I'm comfortible with yet. 8 gig P2's are still incredibly expensive as is the P2 store and it only hold 60 gigs. These simply aren't worth the huge amount of cash to me. The FS-100 might seem like a good thing but untill we get 24pN options I can't justify shelling out the cash. Cineporter keeps getting delayed and looks to be pretty bulky. Simply put, the cost of recording is really up there and good solutions don't seem to be materializing. I love my camera but for most jobs it looks like I'll have to stick to mini-DV which is rather frustrating. I wish there were some sort of solution on the horizon.

some of you may have noticed that gasoline prices are a tad higher than this time last year. Also, pretty much EVERYTHING on the planet is manufactured in China, and has tech support/software design out of India. These countries are doing really well from an economic standpoint so they need more oil for manufacturing, cars, etc. Since a finite number of dinasours kicked the bucket millions of years ago, there is only so much oil to go around, soooooo... the DEMAND places upward pressure on PRICE. Kind of like the P2 cards exept without the dinosaurs.

There are a lot of people holding out on an HVX because of expensive cards or more so, limited recording time.

If Panasonic could make larger cards, it would only help the camera sales and P2 sales. So I suspect they aren't holding out on us.
Besides, I've only seen good customer treatment from Panasonic. So I don't think they should be acused of manipulating AGAINST us purely due to speculation.
JMHO
