Supermates - Alex DePew

I actually liked the cursing, especially when the hero is watching tv and says "bitches" Its perfect as a satire to whole superhero culture, where they can do no wrong. Maybe if that was the only scene it would have highlighted it more. What made it work was that it was so casual. Whereas billy bob's was had some anger behind it, which is good for the character, but doesn't lend itself for a satire of it.

Also I really liked the humor throughout (half naked men on magazines and the spanish accent) oh man that all really worked.

If I had to make some critical comments, on the compressed version we all say the first scene was a bit dark and for me the guy under bed, I didn't notice the face until a second viewing. It could be the compression but it is kinda dark, at least for me.

But what I love is how stupid the hero is for not realizing that his roommate is his arch enemy. That is friggen hilarious.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. You nailed the idea of the satire. As to the compression, I've heard from people on mac's that it is darker than it is on a pc. I downloaded it to check it and it looked fine level wise on my pc at work and home. Is there a way to get it to look good for both pc and mac using one codec? Also, did anyone else have this problem?

Thanks for the comments,
Alex

I'm gonna echo Conrad. Language was unfitting...not sure, maybe delivery would have sold it better. I really liked the titles, but if you could have toned down the blaring purple dildo, I wouldn't have guessed what was coming.

The spanish accent was actually good...pretty funny. Nice job guys!!!

Thanks for the comments. I'm happy to listen to all sides and learn what works and what doesn't for some people. I'd really like to know what about the language specifically you found unfitting. It would really help me get a sense of some of the reaction to the piece and why the cursing seemed to be distracting or out of place to some people.

As to toning down the purple dildo, do you mean in the opening sequence or at the end?

Thanks,
Alex

Alex, for me it wasn't the language per se, but the delivery and context. I think you were going for a casual use of the cursing, but the actors seemed a little too clean cut to be spitting it out like that...my take anyway.

But, I don't think it's a big deal...just something that stood out.

Well done!

Thanks. I had to replace the actor playing the villain and I think my inexperience acting was noticeable in the delivery. Next time I will only be behind the camera. One Billy Bob Thornton on the screen is enough.:)

Your fight definitely fell flat due to the lack of sound effects. You really need the sound effects to "sell" the fight.

Great intro. Great script.
You could've probably used stronger actors--but the guys had a good "look" and were believable roommates.

The sound quality was pretty poor. A lot of the funny lines were lost due to a combination of sound level and delivery.

The people who didn't like the cursing need to spend less time with their mothers. Cursing is fine and often funny (though, it's true, the delivery did kill it a bit).

By the way, the last time I posted on this board, I was banned by an immature moderator who was afraid of open discourse (a fine killer of a forum's potency).

Hopefully, this post won't be deleted.

"...umm.. Mort Mayer. He's Asian"

I find myself quoting lines from this movie throughout my day. "....I'm Dr. Devious. And I know you are El Capitano EJustisssss"

I laughed in the same places. :costumed-smiley-047

Alex nice script. I think its better than the short but I liked the short nonetheless.
Lots of funnyh stuff here and a nice original idea. Would have liked some rediculous super hero costumes to come in at somepoint -- like they rip off their regular clothes and ubdenearth are spandex and what not.

Again, funny stuff.

Just wanted to pop in here and congratulate Alex. You did a great job with all the hurdles that were thrown at you and it came out pretty damn good. I'm sure we could've made it a little tighter and smoother if you didn't have to look at the monitor while acting in the scene:) Anyway, the things that I think could have been better (besides my shooting, because God knows that could've been....anyway) were the sound (because we had no sound man and very little room to work with stands) and the compression. Perhaps it's the fact that we shot in 30p and was put in a 24p timeline. I think perhaps we should have only done that for the sequences that we knew we were going to slow down. I think I used too much shutter for the fight scene as it is, but all the motion looks a bit too strobey/interlacey to me... those are the technical, industry terms btw;). Anyway, you really did pull it off quite well. It was a pleasure working with you and I look forward to seeing more of your work.

I think we both got a little confused about using the 30p for slo-mo. I just starting to learn more about the editing side of things and I haven't really done any slo-mo before so I shot the whole thing in 30p thinking that Alex might want to slow a lot of different parts down....What I didn't think about AT ALL was what kind of timeline that would have to go into. We should have just done the parts that we knew were going to be slowed down. So for my own knowledge, this should've been edited on a 30p timeline? Would we have been able to slow anything down that way? Is there anyway to pull down 30p footage so it's less strobey? Sorry for letting the cat out of the bag Alex...but hopefully we'll both be educated by this.

30p on a 30p timeline is way less stoby than 24p.

How it should be done ... shoot 24pA for most of your project.

The shots you want slo mo shoot 30p or 60i.

You then convert that footage to 24p which will automitically slow it to 80% for 30p or 40% for 60i, dop that in your 24p timeline. Deintrelace and you are good to go.

I know you were downloading bonehand a few minutes ago ... but all of the stuff in the cemetarty was 30p slowed to 80% at 24p except her smile I think and then her walk off transformation at the end was 60i slowed to 40% on a 23.976 timeline. and it all plays dandy on 24pa.

What I would do now is export the finished edit from a 30p timeline, seperate the audio, and convert the video to 24p (which will slow it down 20% to 80%) then drop the video onto a 24p time line and speed it up 25% and it will sync with the audio and play smoothly.

here's the math at a factor of 100

100frames slowed by 20% = 80% or 80 frames
80 frames increased by a factor of 20% (16 frames) would only equal 96 frames.
so to get back to 100 frames increase by a factor of 25% (20 frames)

See you're just way smarter than me....I think all that math made my brain throw up. On a serious note, thanks for the tips. I didn't realize how much extra work shooting the whole thing in 30p would require.

I may be wrong, but I'll bet the word dildo appears in your thread way more than any of the others.

Do you think Jarred will let us add a category for most effective use of a sex toy?

Ryan,
You signed a contract saying you wouldn't give away my secret to strobey/interlacey shooting!

Thanks for the comments. Yeah there were a lot of hurdles to getting this short done. But isn't that true of every film! Hopefully though the next ones will be less complicated in terms of people management. Even with everything that conspired to shut this project down, I am still happy with the result. I learned a ridculous amount and my next short will definitely benefit from the lessons I learned on Supermates.

Thanks Ryan for the excellent work you did on this short. And stop bashing yourself. You did an excellent job and I'd be happy to work with you again.

As for the 30P. That mistake won't happen again.

Thanks,
Alex

Thanks Jack. I am just now getting to comment on all the movies. Bonehand is next up on the list.

I agree that the short could have been funnier. I learned a lot about the importance of pre-planning and comedic timing. And I also learned that I need to be behind the camera and not speaking words and making facial expressions on the business end of the camera.:crybaby:
