Would I be right in assuming that the Cage and Gun are just fashion statements (unless there's no other way to hold the camera)? I do like the cage though.

"Options for hand holding or shoulder use" may be a better statement. Since the RED One camera can be used in a huge range of projects, from cine-style to ENG-style, hand held and on sticks, a good range of accessories, in-house and aftermarket, will be critical. The Cage One has hard-mount points for about any accessory you want to put on it - and you can mount them wherever you want. The Gun may not be as useful as the Cage One or triple handle system, but there may be situations where it's the best choice.

Flexibility, options, scalability, utility, and versatility...

Well, I dunno about you guys, I think I'll buy the cage just for the looks - it's just too darn beautiful...:)

I agree. I think without the cage, the camera looks "bald".

I hope they don't make the camera too small though. Anything smaller than an HVX and the camera risks looking unprofessional on set.

Its actually somewhat larger than it looks on the site, the NAB stereolithographs definitely gave an impression of MASS and, of course, the almost militaristic level of brutal/beautiful design styling doesnt hurt it much either.

That price is really good. I just hope that it's dorky "consumer" appearance doesn't scare away buyers.

Oh, how I wish I could of designed it's ergonomics. I am not much of a visionary but my lustful taste of professionalism is far from satisfied.

If the footage blows people away it shouldn't matter. I really do hope this company is successful. The future of video is going to be pretty damn boring once ultra high definition becomes standard. I mean how much better could it get?

you cant satisfy everyone..Most people love the design, but Red did listen and they have changed the cage, to what extent I'm not sure... remember that cage is an accessory, the actual body is a little more "conservative"

What may I ask do you not like about it Jonathan? It was love at first sight for me but maybe im just a "dorky" consumer :)

When it looks very different with each of what will eventually be scores of different accessory configurations for the camera, how can a collective assessment of "dorky consumer" appearance be made? On a Steadycam with a good 35mm prime and a bevy of accessories it will look "dorky consumer"? On a good Sachtler tripod, with the full gamut of cine-style accessories it will look "dorky consumer"? On a shoulder brace, with a B4 mount, a 2/3" HD lens, back of brace mounted battery, AccuScene VF, it will look "dorky consumer"? Handheld on a Cage One with a S16 zoom, a wireless audio system, and cage-mounted battery, it will look "dorky connsumer"? And on and on...

The basic RED One camera unit is small and simple because of its need to be scalable and flexible. Its form factor morphs into whatever you want to make it. It can be as big and "professional looking" as you want it or need it to be, or it can be configured for compactness and mobility.

While judgmental aestheticists are quibbling over the RED One's form factor, many of us professionals that see the utilitarian vision of it's design will be making a solid living with the RED One camera accessorized in a vast array of cine-style and ENG-style configurations. While some are laughing at its non-traditional design – others of us will be laughing all the way to the bank.

I think the design is great, but Im sooooo glad they have now gone for the black matte look. When it looked like the T2 shiny material I thought it looked too much like a kids toy or a cheap lightsaber.

for the most part they are getting it right I think.

Its not a big deal really, but the camera I saw at nab didn't scream business. It screamed gimmicky consumer camcorder. My girlfriend actually laughed at me because I told her how cool it was going to be. I think it will be worlds better now that it's going to be matte black. That makes me happy.

I have to agree that the camera without the cage looks "ok". I just have a love affair with black contraptions with lots of buttons and switches. Red one appeared to have too many futuristic accents and seems really sleek like a concept car.

The good thing is that most people like it's design. I still plan on buying one, dorky or not, and I agree with all the people who say the important part is what it does and not what it looks like.

It's going to look really cool next to my ps3

To each his own.

The RED's camera body design is freakin amazing. I love it. Awesome work Jim (and the rest of the RED design team).

you do realize that the RED ONE is gonna be black right... the silver version you saw was straight off the mill, so was raw aluminum.

you can goto red.com and see it in its black glory.

That is pretty cool. It does look a lot better in black.
