New Uprez software from Red Giant

hrm, just tried it out myself, and it seems to stretch the image making things SLIGHTLY thinner. Do a side by side comparison, same size screen of the before and after.. me no liky that. reason?

getting a stretched image? look closely.

Can anyone chime in on this for me.

I have footage originally shot in 4:3 and cropped in post. How can I upres this to be more to the crop marks, thus fitting (almost) widescreen?

There is an option for that. I think they call it "ALL" or something. I don't have the software on this machine right now but there is an option that crops the letterbox off.

Yeah, there is a FILL option that will bring it all the way up to the proper marks. I tried this out this morning. It's pretty impressive, especially for being only $99. I have a few situations that this might be useful for.

Just want to bring this post up again:
anyone done some extensive testing yet?
How´s the quality holding up?
Disjecta: have you been convinced to drop your proven and tested photozoom workflow?

once up rezzed, what form of media can it be viewed on? (dvd player?) or is this just for when HD-DVD becomes popular?

I'm not really impressed. To me it looks like Blown-up SD, not HD. Am I missing something here? Can't you get similar results by stretching SD footage in an HD timeline in Vegas?

They have a special on the download version: only $79.20..!

All of Red Giant's products are discounted 20% this week for NAB. I already had Instant HD but I did pick up Key Tools and Primatte 3.0. to take advantage of the special.

They use diffrent algorithms to uprez the footage so something like this will look a lot better than say uprezzing just in photoshop.

Look pretty much the same

Look pretty much the same

They look the same to me between the photozoom image and the Red Giant one. If you don't have photozoom then I can see it would be great but if you already own the program then I would rather save the money on something else. My 2 cents.

They don't look the same at all. Look at the clouds, and the water, and the buildings. If you think they look the same, you should probably go get an eye exam today. The Red Giant file looks much better.

Guys, I think the point of the software is to make sure it looks just as clean as it's 480 when blown up to 720... not better.

Thanks for the tests, Disjecta.

As asked before: Did this convince you to drop your photozoom method? Even though you're already using a Hi-Def camera anwyay. Hehe.

Also, I wouldn't be sure that making things larger in an NLE would be anywhere near the same. I could be wrong, though.

Someone should sticky this so that more people can see the tests.

I'm not doing photozoom any more because I am concentrating on shooting HD at this point but when I shoot with the DVX, I will continue.

The results do make it bigger and more compatible with an HD timeline but it doesn't hold a candle to real HD. In fact, when the two are put side by side, the uprezzed SD looks positively crude. But the point is that you can use it in an HD workflow.

That's really the only benefit I can see, it is not going to create pixels that are not there. It just does a more graceful job at uprezzing than a regular NLE would.

Exactly.

Making an actual HD project out of SD doesn't sound pretty at all.

Speaking of actualy HD... ::Jumps on over to Disjecta's XLH1 thread.::

Which is why I only use Instant HD to bring my cropped 4:3 footage up to 16:9. Does a good job of that and in a pretty easy usable workflow.
