Where can a student get a really cheap or even free HVX?

And don't forget, after you get the camera, you'll need a Kata case to hold it, like the one I have on another thread.

I'm a student who was in the same predicament just a few short weeks ago and I found a solution...I got a loan. Now I have a shiny new 100b I'm using for a student film, and a solid piece of equipment to do some freelance work to pay off that loan.

Actually ... when I was in grad school at university of washington ... there was $2500 contingency loans available for grad students and $1400 available for undergrads.

I got a new mac that way ... basically you go in and ask if there is such a thing and what the limit is.

Then you had to show them an add in a paper showing something of that price.

So you had to bring in an add with the computer you wanted or have a sales person ring it up and void the reciept -- anything so that they could put something on the books. You also had to make a case that you needed this for whatever you were studying or that you needed it to meet emergency cash problems -- such as you live 30 minutes away from campus and your car needs $1400 of repair work.

So yeah check into the loans. Ideally you already have student loans and these emergency ones just go into that pot -- in otherwords 2500 on top of my $38,000 that I could defer, and forebear at a low interest rate based on my income indefinately over a gazillion years didn't make that much different in my monthly payments.

But if you have no loans already or your school has some kind of emergency cash but its not handled as part of the government softy loans then think twice.

That is the funniest thing I've seen and heard for a long time

Ok, serious advice for the original poster. If you're looking for a cam and you have no money, I wouldn't get the HVX. You'll have one hell of a time storing the HD footage and working with it. You'll probably need to drop a good amount of cash on new computer hardware. Plus, it sounds like you really wouldn't know what you were doing anyway, so start out on the DVX. Learn it, and then when you can afford it go with an HVX. They'll probably have an A or B version out by then. Or...you'll switch your major and go into denistry. Ya never know.

Relax P.S.T.

You need to see where everyone is comming from. There is no way (at least I know of) that you will get a free HVX. You ask where you can get a free HVX camera claiming that other students have gotten free Panavision cameras...hate to break it to you but odds are those free cameras are loans which the students would have to return afterwards. Companies like Panavision do this because the majority of features are shoot on film not video. When you gradutate and move up a little bit, maybe working at a large studio they all use film. And Panavision wants to make sure when it's time for you to aquire the equiment, Panavision is the only camera you know. They hook you when your young and they get a customer for life. Same as with Kodak.

And another thing. if you bust your butt at UPS and don't make enough to pay bills and a camera how on earth are you going to afford the computer to handle the HD footage and the P2 cards for the camera? I beleive another user already mentioned this. Maybe you should look at a used DVX or XL1 camera. They go for around 1-2k right now.

But when you really break it all down it's not about a camera. You can have an old Hi-8 camera and no tripod...and as long as your story is good and well planned out people are going to look passed the fact that it wasn't shoot on a 5k dollar camera. Before I got my DVXb I used my video production classes Canon ZR80's and let me tell you that I've seen some amazing shoots those kids have done with those camera's that are better then some stuff i've seen done with a 5k camera. Focus more on story and play the festivals. If your good you can use prize money for the HVX....

P.S.
I took a look at your myspace and it says your only 17. There is plenty of time to get a HD camera. Trust me it's going to be around for a while.

Okay I'm done...

Just use what you have and keep shooting stuff, getting better as you go. When you have enough money for the HVX, your skills will be ready to handle it.
