Europe HVX200E

Hey Jazzx,
i think you are right, but for some people there is no alternative..they have to buy the firestore..anyway, i think Focus worked it out quite well(got allready the experience from the hds before..some of the best as i heard...)
and i also think that people will have to buy it if they want to use the cam in april, cause there are really few P2 cards available..so if you can get some-get em..but i think the prices in europe are horrible..!

Lets cross the fingers for the cam release...didnt some people say its coming out today?-I think it wount...!

Europe has better P2 availability than the US, at least on the 4's, I've ordered a 4gb card, will wait on feedback on the FS-100 and the Cineporter, but most probably buy another 8gb later on and get by with them and an OTG enclosure, I think I'll be just fine for a year+ and by then 16gb will be a reality, who knows even 32.

From what i know its quite hard to get P2 also in Europe.
I mainly asked for 8gig cards..no chance before end of april, think also 4gigs are hard to get.
Try 2f find some in japan:quite impossible, except some 4gig cards in smaller shops...i believe that they are inventing the 16gig cards soon..if you watch the whole sd-market, then you could see a lot of improvement there(8gig sd cards..), but i dont know how fast they are....!°

Panasonic here told me that there is a big stock of 4's in Europe and that yes there are issues with 8gb availability which will be resolved very soon, also the 570€ price on the 4 is not that bad, I mean you can't really beat the portability, native mode recording and ease of use of the P2 card can you?

Yes you are right, i just decided to go for P2 because of portability and the native-mode recording.
Also i dont like to have the bulky-fs on top-no good way to work for the dp..!

I hope that the 4gigs will be available for european users, i tried to get some 8gig from japan..without any luck..no i ordered 4gigs...for a better price than in europe...!

Don't you guys think that getting a Firestore the minute it comes out, is a bit risky considering no formal testing or review has been done and no other professionals from the industry tested its robustness etc. I mean we are (Pal territories) really lucky because we had (and still having) that for like 3 months with the HVX. Take a look at the feedback from pro's, semi-pro's and plain users, it's huge and really helpful to all of us. Don't you think that one should wait a bit for a 2000€+ investment? Just your opinion.

Well if it doesn't work it'll go back, simple as that. And I'll expect it swapping out for P2 cards :)

So the fs-100 doesnt record native dvcprdhd? Blimey, there are shortcomings to every solution.

Is it possible to downconvert to dv from the fs-100?

Well it's my understanding that it does record DVCPRO-HD, but because it is streamed through Firewire, 24 frames are embedded (50i on Pal) on a 60i stream. By native I meant the fact that with the P2 card you can choose to record only the active frames on the card, hence the .pn modes that are only supported with the P2 card, the same I think goes with the variable frame rates, but feel free to correct me If I'm wrong

I'm wondering what the pros and cons are of using the fs-100. Wouldnt a good laptop be cheaper and less cumbersome(using the camera) than the 100?

If the 100 doesnt record native( it says it doesnt on the panasonic site prelim. info) why compromise when all it takes is little extra effort to switch cards and offload?

and on and on...

Recording 720pN (native) on an 8gig card you can get approximately 40 minutes.

Recording 720/24p (over 60p) on 8gig card you get 16 minutes.

Recording 720/24p (over 60p) on the FS100 you can get approximately 100 minutes.

You can't record native on the FS100.

I think the Firestore is a nice thing to have - where does it clip on to the HVX though?

This is of cause using two 8 GB cards not one.

Damn, sorry yes. Was reading the (slightly misleading small print) Panny information without thinking about what I was posting.

On this Panasonic brochure it just has 8g P2 card - 720pN = 40 mins ---- 720/24p (over 60p) = 16 mins. It doesn't say 8gig x2, which it certainly should as 720/24p (over 60p) equates to 1gig per minute (I think).

They've shown it mounted on top of the shoe, or mounted in the 1/4-20 socket on the top of the handle.

I think belt-mounted or mounted on the tripod will prove more likely and perhaps more practical.

So, the only advantage to native is compression? It has no other use? For some reason I had it linked in my head to variable frame rate.

I think that I may be back with the firestore.

There's no difference in compression. The only advantages to "native" are longer recording time on the P2 cards, and the ability to preview variable-frame effects right in-camera.

As far as the ultimate footage goes in post, with proper pulldown removal you can do anything in "over 60" mode that you can do in "native" mode.
