Hey All,

Does anyone ahve experience with the zuiko 35-100 as a video lens? I need to do all my purchasing for the af-100 before 2011 rolls around, and it seems like this would be a great lens for interviews.

any thoughts?

I use the 35-100 for interviews and am happy with it. The focus is noisy and it breathes quite a bit, but that's never been a problem for interviews where everything is pretty much set prior to rolling.

Also use the 14-35 along with this lens for 2 camera interviews and that's a pretty sweet combo. FYI - the 14-35 has quiet focus and doesn't breathe nearly as much as the 35-100.

For a 2 cam shoot, I'll try to light for at least f/4 and use the 35-100 for a tight shot from around 8-9 ft. which yields a DOF of about 3 inches. Then put the 14-35 at around 5-6 ft. for a wider shot which gives me around a 10 inch DOF. So, if the subject moves forward or back, I'm pretty well covered.

Having the capability to cover 14-100 at a constant 2.0 is definitely not too shabby.

If one is used to shoot with a 5D and 70-200 this lens will probably feel just like the Canon combo. 35-100 is a sweet focal range in the 4/3 system especially for video. But I guess a set of 35/50/85 would be better in many areas. You can get closer and there are 35/50/85 F1.4 lenses from many different brands so when you need the speed it's there. It's also a very heavy lens. Heavier than Canons 70-200/2.8 lenses so you'll need lens support.

I would use a 50 or 85 for interviews.

tflak,
Do the Oly lenses increase in physical length as you zoom? Wondering if I could use a mattebox with these.

The 14-35 does increase about 3/4", but the 35-100 does not increase at all when zooming.

editman - the 35-100 is heavy at around 3.5 lbs - it comes with a lens collar - what I'm wondering about is the advisability of hanging the AF100 off the lens. I'm thinking it shouldn't be a problem unless one has a bunch of gear mounted to it.

BTW - minimum focal distance with the 35-100 is around 4.5 ft. and just 14" on the 14-35.

SOS - af101 not working with Olympus Zuiko 35-100 f2 lens

I have just taken delivery of an AF101 (European model). I bought two Olympus Zuiko Four-thirds zooms to go with it:
35-100 f2, and 14-35 f2. The 14-35 works fine, but the 35-100 produces a black screen (even though the aperture is wide open) and the lens is not communicating with the camera like the 14-35 does.

I am using the recomended micro 4:3 to 4:3 adaptor, the Panasonic DMW-MA1.

The 14-35 is listed on the "lenses that work with this camera" page of the af101's instruction manual... but the 35-100 is not!

Have I bought a duff lens, or is the 35-100 simply not compatible with the af101?

UPDATE 30th Dec: Looks like the problem is "my lens has a fault". Someone kindly emailed me this today: "I just got my AF101 and tested it with both 14-35 and 35-100. Autofocus works with the 14-35 not with the 35-100. But IRIS works on the 35-100 and you can adjust focus manually."

That's really strange, John. I'd swear we put the 35-100mm on the AF-100 we used on "A Verse…" earlier this month. Although in hindsight, we may have only tested the 14-35mm due to time constraints. I can't think of any reason one lens would work while the other doesn't. Strange.

I have the 35-100 and it works as it should on my GH1 with Olympus MMF1 and MMF2 adapters so it should work with the AF camera as well. It is wide open so light should pass even if there is no communication with the lens. I know the 35-100 parks itself at infinity when you turn off the camera but that shouldn't result in a black screen.

I successfully used the 14-35 when we were at the rental house, but I do remember you saying the 35-100 did not work on set with the Panasonic adapter. I never made time to test it out or troubleshoot it myself.

Could this be a case of the "lens check" option?

If you aren't getting a picture when you turn on your new camera for the first time. You might need to turn off the "LENS CHECK" option in the OTHER FUNCTIONS menu. Unless of course you are using Micro 4/3 lenses.

I have the same setup (even the adapter) and assure you it works also for the 35-100.
The black screen troubleshooting is either "lens check" menu option to OFF , or delicately turning the lens against the adapter to get them to the right position (slight click).
The bad news is I am sure the adapter/mount combo cannot be trusted for the size and weight of the lens. The front of the lens travels way too far when pressed. It must be stabilized additionally with some rigging (rails, plate etc)
AF and IRIS work, but not simultaniously, it's either or. They are a bit noisy too when working, easily recorded by the on-board mike.
But then, all of that is in line of the camera's intended market--drama production.
With the 35-100 zuiko it looks like one hell of a pro camera already, imagine stripping the grip, rigging it, follow focus, 8 inch monitor, on a good dolly....

Ah! Thank you, that is an awesome example! So, do you know of any video of a lens that doesn't breath much? For comparison? Thank you in advance!

yes, it's a beast...

yes, it's a beast...

Af101+Zuiko35-100 is a beast...and needs some rigging to keep it solid together .

On the user manual there is the list of the officially supported lenses and the only zuiko officially supported is the 14-35mm f2.0.
Lumix 14mm f2.5 is not supported at the moment also.

Haha...that is a beast...guess it's time for some rails. However, at this point I'd have no other use for them. May just try the Manfrotto 293 Telephoto Lens Support for now ($70) and beef it up with a 394 quick release. Not sure how stable it would be, but for the price it might be worth a try:

thanks for the link. fortunately the 35-100 comes with its own tripod collar/foot and a simple plate might be the solution...

maybe it's not supported (whatever that means) but it works just fine, not any different from the 14-35mm.
