Zooming vs. speedramping, which looks better?

Oh okay thanks. However, are there any parfocal lenses that can go up to 300mm that are good quality? Because at 300, I will have more compression, which I like the look of, if there are any?

Have you taken into account the format you're using? What was the camera you shot the above test on?

I shot on a Canon T2i I have, but was thinking of shooting the actual project on the BMPCC, which has a smaller sensor, but will not make much difference, I don't think? So I thought a 300mm would be enough for compression still.

Certainly enough for compression either way with 300mm.

A t2i has a 1.6 crop factor. 300mm yields 480mm equivalent field of view and perspective/compression.

The pocket 4K has a 1.9 crop factor thus a 252mm lens will yield 480mm equivalent field of view and perspective/compression.

And a 200mm may even suffice, opening up other lens options.

The t2i at 237mm would show you what the P4K at 200mm would look like

Oh okay thanks. There are 3 types of shot I want a long telephoto lens for. One is compression so for example, if an actor is holding a pistol and pointing it, I can make the pistol look really close and small compared to the face, if that makes sense?

The second type of shot is if I want to pan along with an actor running, I can pan for a long time, the longer the lens is, if that makes sense.

The third is the big crash zoom, unless of course that is too tall of an order, and in which case, I could just use a wide lens on a gimbal and speed ramp it, if that's better.

Oh yeah, for sure, I just don't know if I want to throw a lot of money at it, if that can be avoided. As for using a parfocal lens, can a manual focus lens do the job, while fast zooming as long as I get better at focusing?

Oh well on this forum we are allowed to use nicknames unlike the DVI forum. I just wanted as many opinions I could get from all around :).

Or perhaps it’s because you were previously ironpony on this forum.

You had this same conversation, 16 pages worth, on another forum a year and a half ago. Why do you still have to ask these same questions 17 months later?!

I’m going to make this as clear as I can: you need to stop running in circles and posting the same questions all over the place. You need to make a decision. Rent some lenses and test them out (plenty of lens rental places that will ship to you). Choose the one you like.

Most of all, you need to stop with all the chatter, get off your arse, and actually make a movie. Just... do something. And stop relying on hundreds of pages of forum discussion to try and help you make a decision. If you are unable to make a decision on your own, you will never make it in film. The best way to learn is to trust your initial impulse and to try doing that thing. Did it work? Great! Did it not work so well? Think about how you could have done it better, and maybe even try again based on that. THAT’s how you learn to make better decisions.

And stop trying to sneak back into forums under assumed names.
