zoom mechanism noisy

I searched and saw a few threads on this topic, but several of them involved the camera zoom being noisy after some sort of trama such as a drop. I've had mine just since November and it hasn't suffered a trauma. Still there is a noticable sound (both in manual and servo zoom). On servo zoom it seems like the motor is laboring a bit a high speeds. I'm going to run some tests today, but I would be very surprised if this doesn't show up on the audio.

So is this a defect, that is should it be silent (or nearly silent)? And if so, is this a defect that panasonic would also call a defect (from a warrentee standpoint)?

Many thanks

The zoom on my camera is virtually silent. I've never heard it operate in anything but a dead quiet room, and then only when I put my ear next to the camera.

I got my HVX this afternoon and after giving it a 10 minute use once-over, I found the zoom to be noisy as well. Noisy enough that when I increase the audio level sensitivity on camera, I can see in my LCD that the noise is getting picked up by the microphone.

That's kind of whack. My DVX doesn't do that.

I can hear my zoom too. Its not loud, but its loud enough for the mic to pic up. My mic also pics up my FS100. Its not real noticable, but I can hear it.

The weird thing is that mine is only noisy sometimes now. I've had a time or two when it's been silent all day long.... then the next day it starts up again for a while.

mine was silent until I took my camera to panasonic to replace the battery plate for the clips that snapped off... After I picked it up, a few weeks later it seemed noisy and it sounds like its working very hard.. it also doesn't seem to zoom at the same speeds/rates it used to.. I'm sure panasonic is going to blame me, but we'll see what they say.. It's been over 6 months and I just haven't had time to be without my camera.. It's more of an annoyance than a real problem, but i would like to have it fixed... Panny care to chime in?

If you or someone who borrows your camera uses the zoom ring while the camera is in servo mode, you will damage the drive mechanism.

I've read this in the manual as well. I've been the only operator of this camera. While there is, of course, a chance that I inadvertantly bumped or moved the zoom ring while in servo mode, I don't think I did. And I know with certainty that I haven't intentionally done a manual zoom when in servo mode.
