Zoom H6

I think it looks promising. I'm still waiting on the verdict of how decent the pre's will be, and also how they compare to the 60d. I plan to get one or the other. I like features of both so it's down to the pre's for me at this point.

Thanks Alex, saw that but was looking for more on the H6 itself.

I'm in the wait & see mode too Rob.. thanks.

Not directly video related but I've done some comparisons to get at the H6 preamp quality:

It seems like both the h6 and 60d have upgrades pre's but I guess the real question is how upgraded are they. From the clips I've seen both appear to be a decent and worthwhile improvement. Higher sound with less noise so the noise floor seems much improved.

I guess time will tell. I wonder how good the tascam hdda preamps are. They sound pretty good on paper but how they sound to ear is what i wonder about.

I'd also like to hear some thoughts on the Zoom h6, especially from anyone who has used one. I'm looking at the Roland r26 too, but am more drawn to the design of the h6. I need a good quality versatile recorder for use mainly on short narrative films and the odd corporate vid.

I have both, like them and have them each for a specific tasks. We did several tests and the tascam is -30db less noise than then zoom however that isn't much to disregards the zoom. For the price. Zoom packs more for the money.

I eventually decided to go with the Zoom rather than the Roland. Took delivery today of the H6 and am very pleased so far (though I should state I'm not an audio expert). The H6 is very clean sounding, it's easy to dial in the basic settings I need, the levels are finger-tip adjustable while recording and the unit phantom powers my Rode NTG2. Good build quality overall too. The basic kit gives you both the XY and MS mic options, all in a study hard plastic case. All for under €400.

The only small drawbacks I see so far: The MS mic does look fragile. Non-locking xlrs inputs. That menu screen will attract scratches. I wonder too if dirt and dust will collect in the main top mic input when you don't have the XY or MS mic connected (and you misplace that tiny protective cap).
