Zoom H6

That is one clumsy-looking recorder. XLR cables sticking out of both sides of a hand-held record? Yikes...

Does anybody else see some resemblance to the shape of the old Canon XL1 XLR adaptor? It looks almost like it was shaped as a shoulder-mount to be used with DSLR rigs. Probably just a coincidence, but now it's got me thinking...

That is one retarded form factor...I have to laugh...

Zoom makes stuff mainly geared for the musician, to record and practice, video needs are far from their intention.

...I don't expect much from the pre-amps, but at least they've added a 20 dB pad that can be switched on for each of the XLR inputs, which means they finally have a recorder than can handle LINE level imputs.

Zoom H6 Handy Recorder Info

The H6 is expected to sell for about $400 US.

If it does indeed work well when feeding it professional line levels, then I know a lot of people involved in music that will find this very attractive as a low cost bit bucket. For film, it might become a good cheap backup recorder for cart work, but there are better choices for most other uses.

I finally bought a Zoom H4n a month ago, and this thing released. Heh. Either way, I think I will stick to the H4n. The H6 looks like a tank. Even with 4-6 XLR inputs, do people even use that many for smaller productions, during one take? I mean, I understand setting up stereo mics through out the scene, but, for filmmaking, it just seems that Zoom is overdoing it with the H6. They have usb-looking adapter for their implements. And, it just seems too, I don't know, "gimmicky" with all of the attachments. I guess we'll see how consumers take to it.

It depends greatly on the situation and personal preferens, but I've been involved in several quite simple short films where I constantly needed around 4-5 channels, preferably recorded separately. This is 1 boom (on occasion 2), 2-3 lavs, and not too rarely a plant mic. Then again, I'm quite happy with just a boom if I can get it in a good position.
