Zoom H4N - replacement soon?

G'day all,

I have made the decision to go down the H4N path of sound capture. While many of you audiophiles might cringe, it seems the best solution for my level of film-making and my expected audience of 6 or so people looking at it on either Vimeo or Youtube. It is also useful as a guitar practice/recording tool (again something I'm not overly proficient at).

Now baring any discussion of the pros and cons of my personal choice I have one issue.
I rarely buy things at the bleeding edge but lately I find myself at the other scale and purchasing "toys" at the sunset stage of their life, just prior to being supersceded.

Does anybody have any idea if this is about to happen to the H4N? It seems to have been around quite a while now considering the rate of replacement these type of products.

I'm expecting I shall buy it only to hear some announcement a week later of a newer/better but similar model.

Thanks for reading!

They just released new firmware for it, which means they are still devoting resources to the H4n's development. It remains a very good recorder for the money, they're probably selling hundreds of them a day, and no competitor is pressuring them right now, therefore I don't see it being replaced anytime soon, though that's just my somewhat educated guess.

The reality is that whatever electronic gadget is basically obsolete by the time it hits store shelves, the theory being that the next idea is already developed and awaiting manufacture.

If you wait to purchase everything out of fear of the next, greatest thing coming out... you'll never move forward. Base your decisions on what you need vs. what's available now, not what you think might be available in the near future.

Thanks for the responses - all good advice.

I'll probably just go out and grab it as I need to practice a bit of bass as my mates are threatening to make me join in on some NYE song murdering.

That deal looks fine but I'm in OZ and really need to purchase here for warranty purposes. Add at least a third to your prices even though our dollar is approaching parity. Economists will tell you the reasons (in other threads somewhere on this forum) why that needs to be but considering they are neither manufactured in US or here and we seem to have no protecionist pricing duties it seems kind of tough from this end.

Went out and bought it just now.
$AUS 399 = $US 399 was best I could do without going the grey import route.
Turns out the best price I could do in all of OZ was at my local music store here in Newcastle, and not from either Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane.

Bought it as a christmas present for myself - will be a surprise for the wife...ha ha ha (or should that be ho ho ho)

Cheers
