ZOOM H4n / Audio question

I recorded and interview. Normally I'm in 4 track mode. I had forgot I switched to stereo mode. I had two inputs a boom and a lav. The boom background noise is horrible. I would have thought the inputs would be a separate L and R track however when I imported the file to FCP they are mixed together.

So my questions are:

-Is there a way to separate this mix on the zoom or with some other software

or

-Who knows someone REALLY good at pulling background noise out?

Thanks in advance!
-Glenn

If you were in stereo mode, and they were plugged into separate inputs, they are recorded separately. When you say they're "mixed together" in FCP, what do you mean? Is it that you have a stereo file? If that's the case, you need only to select the audio and go to Modify>Stereo Pair and deselect. That will separate the tracks, allowing you to pull one or the other into the time line.

As far as the background noise on the boom... that's a tough one. Once recorded, it's recorded. There's not a whole lot that you can do, and noise removal isn't likely to help.

There is a setting on the H4N that mixes the two channels. I had to do it once to output a mono mixed signal to a soundboard. I believe the setting is under Input -> mono mix. Of course it seems unlikely you would have accidentally switched it on.

More likely is that the stereo recording was of the on-board microphone rather than the input 1 and 2. In stereo mode, you have to select which input to record: MIC or 1/2.

Monitoring the audio is also critical to catch these issues live. I've learned the hard way that not monitoring audio is like recording with a video camera without looking at the viewfinder! :-)

Sorry, misread your post. I think Chris is right. Unfortunately it's pretty easy to do on the h4n and you're probably out of good options. If you use soundtrack pro there is a decent noise removal tool, and between that and some eq it might be better, but will never sound like the boom or lav.
