Zoom H4 vocal recording setup question

I just picked up the H4 to capture documentary voice overs, sound effects, etc.

My question: I've got to record some vocal tracks this weekend for a short film and what are the best settings for this? wav24bit/96kHz? is that too much? thoughts?

I was going to test this with the built in mics as my mic collection is pretty light right now (one AT4073a shotgun).

Any tips on how to get best recording out of this unit would be appreciated. I searched the forum and got reviews/etc., but not so much optimal setup.

Well, I ran some tests - seems like for vocal work high gain is required to get the voice properly but that really picks up everything, including what sounds like white noise though may be some distant electronic hum. I suppose I'll work with high gain, 96k, 24bit for now unless I hear otherwise.

I'd go with the standard.. 24bit/48khz Wav

I love the Zoom H4 for location folly as well as quick ADR to throw into pro tools when you'er on the run, but the internal mic just doesn't do justice...

Use 48 kHz sample rate only if you are recording for video. You gain nothing by using higher sample rates.

Use 24 bit sample depth for extra levels setting safety margin. With 24 bits you can set levels safely about 12 dB lower than with 16 bits and adjust the final levels in post.
