Zoom H1-when to use auto level

Hi
I've heard it recommended to never use the auto level control on the H1. Always set your input levels manually.
But I'd like to hear other opinions on this matter.
What are some specific instances when it would make sense to use auto level?

It make sense when you're recording a meeting or something along those lines where audio quality isn't as important as capturing everything.

The problem is that you're in a video related forum where for the most part people are trying to capture the most pristine audio they can for their video projects. and for that Auto Gain or AGC is highly discouraged due to the fact that when the room goes quiet the recorder turns its gain up raising the noise floor to an undesirable level (hiss all over the place) and for video project that is a no no, not to mention you can hear the pumping of the gain as the ambient level rises and falls.

I never use auto gain for anything. Even for things where the quality of the audio may not be as important, it just sounds really annoying.

Agreed, except: regarding the aforementioned meetings. Our office uses an H2 for board and executive meetings. These recordings are used for minutes and are not intended for any kind of distribution. Due to the size of the conference room and the dynamic range of council members' voices due both to projection and proximity, auto levels/auto gain makes it easier for the recordings to be transcribed. That's about the only case where auto levels are useful or acceptable.

What about in an uncontrollable high volume situation, such as live music? Wouldn't AGC help prevent clipping?

No. If you get a high enough SPL, anything can get puked out. What you need in a situation like a loud concert is a good limiter, but again, if you don't have good mics that can handle high SPL, then even limiters don't matter.
