Zoom H1 vs. H4n

Is there a considerable difference between the two in terms of audio quality?

From what I have read, there is a difference with the on-board microphones, and the H4n is setup for XLR inputs, but if if I was just going to hook up a lav to record and monitor, will I get the same results?

If you plan to use external microphones, whether lav or shotgun or hypercardioid, XLR inputs are a must.
