Here is Zoo Legacy (Ottawa, Canada local band) music video that we shot for them back in March

It's a music video, but we developed it as a short story

Shot on 2 GH2's and a 60D

Enjoy!

cool video!! the colors pop in the house scene.

i'm wondering about the low contrast look in the opening scenes - was that to give it a feeling of a different time period or was it a stylistic choice to make it feel less 'dslr-ish' and more like a film camera? i'm playing around with different contrasts to achieve more of a film look out of my 5d/60d and am trying to figure out what others do

Hey thanks!! It was definitely a mix between both decisions as not only it's a separate instance from the video but we wanted to allure to the possibility that this was a 'film turned music video'

Check out our other short, chasing liberty, that was shot on 60Ds but had a flatter type look to it!

Sorry for the late reply.

As usual, watching your stuff is always interesting. Music videos are hard to give feedback on, in a way, because they are so subjective. From total abstract performance art to a literal translation, everyone has their own idea on how to interpret the artist's song. That being said, I thought the cinematography fit what you were going for, although there were some transitions where you had hardly any noise and then went to a cinema verite' noise level (living room to stairs) for example. The variety of colours kept it interesting (and wasn't forced) and was nicely implemented, except I would have liked to see a different take with the red room or made the transition up the stairs more obvious/graphic - might be misinterpreted, and it's been done a lot anyway. I believe your friend is doing dp duties right ? Is it the same dp from your shorts ? (that sounds weird)

The directing had a good pace, but occasionally it felt at odds with the music - nothing too noticeable, but if the pace is contrary to the music then there should be info./reason for it. Mostly though, I liked the mixing slow mo and normal. It's a credit to the director, that in a 4 min video I wasn't tempted to fast forward. Specifically, your framing/composition in MCU's - CU's (off center etc.) is superb (her apartment, for example). And some nice handheld movement.

I was wondering where you were on the story component of the vid, and/or how far you wanted to make it into that, or what the band wanted, because for me that's the real question with this vid. Tonally, it felt like there was two sets of competing ideas. On the one hand, story-wise it may have needed some streamlining/juxtaposition, on the other hand, if it's a feel good vid; that would be out of place.

Overall, I'd say the band was lucky to have you. Honestly, there's a sensibility with you guys that is always interesting. Are you thinking of cutting a shorter version for Much ?

Cheers

Look forward to whatever you guys try your hand at.

Amazing sum up yet again D_and_G! Absolutely, right off the bat when we first listened to the song 6 months ago, all three of us (at CSS) had divergent viewpoints but we all had (along with the band) one thing to get across: A party where we all have a good time! So we built a story around that goal that was strafing away from the obvious relationship/breakup story. We as the producers/director/dp wanted to create a mini short story; layers; all that. Actually, our mini intro of 60s was closer to 3-4 minutes before we cut it down!! We love giving to our audience more than the epidermal layer of a story. In anything we do, there's always subplot :)

Yes! We ran into some noise issues with a couple clips as we were bouncing around between the clean imaged GH2 and the not-so-clean, 60D. Hindsight, we would have kept it to the one camera and shot it across multiple days instead of one. The dp for this one was a mix between two people. As for directing, thank you! Once again we were lucky to have the same director for our Residual short and he allowed our main actress to really come out of her shell (she is a model)

As a matter of fact, the video might just be heading on Much sooner rather than later!!

Thanks again

If I catch it, I'll definitely raise a toast to you !

It seems you're building a great team there.

Cheers
