hey, that's where we saw it too.....just think- we may have been there for the same showing. it's a small world, after all.

Barry, I know you guys are real busy, but, actually, I WASN'T done. Just a head's up . . . I was finally able to create the high quality encode I wanted to do in the first place and resent the .WMV file late last night as you had described in another post, e.g., "mytitle_2." Please delete the first submission. Thanks!

Gee, I hope not ... did you get popcorn thrown on you buy some obnoxious drunk guy (aka my buddy)? That's one of the few things I remember about the movie ... the opening credits, him throwing popcorn on people, and the ending credits. I'll have to rent it sometime.

Yep, very small world. Most people seem to have never heard of Vancouver, WA.
 
No, I don't remember anyone throwing popcorn! Definately rent it sometime...fun movie (and there is Mila Jovovich).
I know Vancouver because I lived in Seattle and my mom used to live in Portland.

I'm glad they were lenient on the midnight deadline... If anybody asked me I would have said give somebody an extra DAY if they wanted... but I was afraid it was a hard deadline and submitted mine unfinished as well as NBC... My DVD edit won't be better, but it will be different.

I probably could have found a way to tell a little more about the people involved... but I just couldn't figure out how to do it in 5 minutes... so I sent what I had at 11:30 central. (allowing for the upload time)
 
I ran into the hugest export/ compression problems, and I got mine turned in SUPER late, one of the last ones for sure.

I'll never forget it: "Yeah, we should be done pretty damn close to midnight." Then at 7:30 the next morning, as my girlfriend and producer are passed out on the floor, I finally get the damn thing up.

It was a long project, and a long night. I'm not %100 satisfied/ done with my project. A few of the VFX shots are a bit off, but you shouldn't be able to tell on the compressed version. My DVD version will change slightly, but nothing more than a few levels and some color stuff.

But in the end, I'm really happy with what we were able to produce, and even if I hadn't gotten to enter the flick (say, by missing the deadline) it still would have been the greatest filmmaking experience I've ever had.
 
Wow. I almost feel like I was ahead of the game for once. Mine was submitted my 9:30pm Central time. I'm used to it being a last-minute sort of thing.
 
Talk about OUT OF SEQUENCE!

So first I shot it. Then I did the ROUGH CUT. Then I left for work. Then it got "finished" (a huge overstatement), then it got uploaded.

THEN I SAW IT.

Were it not for my wife who so gracefully spent a half day re-editing the rough cut and adding some score, it would not be in... it's not REALLY finished, but it cuts to a natural break point right around the five minute mark, so I said - what the hell, let's upload it. It's not color corrected, and the score is just a stock royalty free music, and due to my stolen equipment, there is no dialog, only a crappy voice over. But it's a movie nevertheless...

My lessons for future:

Don't get into projects in the middle of summer. It's an impossible schedule.

Don't let anyone in the family die, and if they do, don't go to the funeral. It's a morale killer.

If you are in the crunch, don't promise help to anyone else - focus on finishing my own thing.

DOn't rely on friends' help. Only deal with film people. The kids were great, but still required a lot of minding. As a result, both direction and photography suffers. Oh well - it's not for Cannes, is it? :thumbsup:

Hire an editor :shocked:
 
Wow, your wife knows how to edit? How cool is THAT?! I'd love it if my wife had some techical & creative ability ... oh well, she's everything else I fail so miserably at.

As far as the kids, XCheck, sure it probably could have had a higher production value using people that knew what they're doing, but they've got to learn somehow, and I'm sure you guys had a memorable experience out of it.

I'm glad you were able to get it in. Weren't you thinking about dropping out? At least it's something, and you obviously put work into it. I'm in Horse's boat, I submitted an unfinished version because I didn't know the deadline would be so lenient. Oh well, at least I got it in.

Ok, I'm caught up on sleep now. I ended up staying up until 6AM on the 16th, trying to get my file size down to an acceptable level, but couldn't get it done with QT, and my WMV encoder was blue-screening. I have to say I flipped out. Luckily, Barry was understanding and let me sort the issue out, which actually ended up being a corrupt DLL. God I hate Windows.

Anyway, it looks like I wasn't the only pathetic bastid squealing at the last minute. And I want to point out once again how freaking cool this forum and these people are. Where else are you gonna enter an adhoc video contest and get a rockin' T-shirt, freaky poster, and a pressed DVD set (I know it has got to be a set!!!) along with all the sage wisdom of the experts to help you along?

We're going to have a DVD release party to celebrate the DVD, whatever form it ends up being. Y'all ought to do the same in your home towns!!!
 
My crew is going nuts to see all of the films. I think we're going to do a premiere at one of the local theaters here. That'd be a sweet dvd easter egg. Pictures from the premiere lol

Man if I had any idea we could be late late I woulda' kept editing... I'm finding all kinds of alternate possibilities that I hadn't considered (with unused clips) and now I think my entry coulda' been a lot better by integrating B-Roll of stuff that I now see could have been A-Roll stuff!

There's no doubt my DVD will be a lot more fun then my entry... now I'm pissed that I stopped editing too early.
 
Yea, I think the DVD will have much more refined shorts. It'll be good to see what we got done w/ the time constraint though.
