Zhiyun Crane

The Crane can't do what the camera can't do. Do these cameras have the capability to have these features controlled via the USB port? Another way to go would have been to include Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, which is where Panasonic put the remote control capabilities. Going wireless for such a short hop saves having a cable in the way and should be reliable.

I may have missed it, but don't see anything in the GH5 manual about using USB for these sorts of functions.

[edit] the new release of GH5 firmware allows control via the USB port using PC software. It just came out in August, so there has been no time to implement changes. But it's not clear to me what are the capabilities through the USB.

Ughhh it's unfortunate but i'm gonna have to tell my company to go with the v2 for now. I really hope zhiyun and panny can work something out together in the future to get focus and iris/iso control on this thing.

They seem out of touch with what people are using these days. Maybe i'm wrong and Canon DSLR's are the most popular camera to use on gimbals worldwide.

No mirrorless, Sony, Panasonic and Fujinon, those are what most people are using. I have an 80D because I like it as a still camera and I occasionally use it on my Crane V1. But I will probably be buying a Fujinon XT-2 eventually because the 80D is only a 1080 camera and our clients want 4K.

Maybe consider the XC15. It works pretty well on the Crane and would play well with the C200.

well in a sense it seems like this is a big brother of sorts to the crane 1. it can handle an fs5 with power zoom, possibly c200 as well?

I was referring to the camera control features only supporting Canon.

Yeah I realize that but apparently camera control via USB port wasn't even possible in the GH5 until a late August firmware update. That's probably why the Crane 2 was initially designed around Canon, because the follow focus feature wouldn't have worked with Panny anyway until they did the firmware update. Hopefully in the near future they'll figure out a camera control solution with Panny.

btw: I think I ran into you at NAB at one of the tripod booths.

edit: I guess firmware 2.0 for the GH5 isn't out till the end of September? I found this on the Panasonic site but it does not mention what can be controlled over USB:

1. Compatibility with "LUMIX Tether" PC software
This new firmware enables GH5 tethered shooting via USB, using “LUMIX Tether” PC software. Users can control the camera by connecting it to a PC via USB. It lets you view the image on a large PC screen while shooting, which is helpful in commercial photoshoots of portraits, products and so on, where continuous confirmation is required. You can use [6K PHOTO] [4K PHOTO] and start and stop video recording with the tethered shooting. It is also possible to choose the folder to save the image files in the PC.

If Panasonic allows focus, ISO, TV, AV, etc over USB with this firmware update I'm sure Zhiyun will make the follow focus compatible soon.

i wonder if a 1DXmkII with a wide angle would work on this gimbal. it would be a bit heavy but this is really for heavier cameras & lenses. I've got the original Ronin with a ReadyRig and its very nice and can hold for a long time but it quite a contraption and in some settings a smaller more discreet rig would be welcome. I've got the A7sII that might be too light for this? I'm considering just getting the older Crane v2 for my A7sII but this one intrigues me. it looked to have a very smooth look when walking. better than most although it could be the reviewer is just better than most.

Hey All,

Just picked one of these up to use with my a7sii and have what might seem like a dumb question, but here goes; is it possible to balance this setup with a rode mic on top of the camera? Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but really having trouble with the first adjustment, fore and aft, can't seem to get it to work. Is there something I'm missing?

It's going to depend on which camera and lens you use, but I think it's going to be way too top-heavy

Thanks Samuel. I'm thining of getting one of these, but wonder if the Rode mic cable will be too short.

Also, I'm noticing that the camera mounting plate is very sticky in one area, making fine adjustments tricky. Is this common on these, or should the plate move without any resistance?
